Brooks Museum Announces Call for Submissions |

|
MEMPHIS, TN.- The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art will present a juried exhibition of regional contemporary art during the summer of 2007. Perspectives will provide an overview of contemporary art made within a 300-mile radius of Memphis, which includes parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee. Applications for Perspectives are due on December 8, 2006.
Works chosen for the exhibition will demonstrate how regionalisms, which were once defined as peculiar characteristics of work produced outside of cultural centers, have become strategies for dealing with local and global issues embedded in a broad visual and philosophical exchange. Artists are invited to submit work in any medium.
Michael Rooks, Associate Curator at The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii, and formerly Assistant Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, will jury the exhibition. Rooks is also co-curator of Situation Comedy, a traveling exhibition circulated by ICI, and Dreaming of a Speech Without Words: The Paintings of H.C. Westermann, which is currently touring nationally.
The first rounds of jurying will be completed through CAFÉ, an electronic submissions agency for artists. CAFÉ Call for Entry, www.callforentry.org provides a cost-effective way of surveying submissions from a wide geographic area. In addition, it offers the benefit of introducing the submitting artists to a powerful new way of disseminating their art. The first round of jurying will be completed by January 2, 2007.
The final selections will be made through studio visits. The museum will pay one-way shipping of exhibited works. Studio visits will take place during January and February of 2007. Exhibition selection will be completed by March 31, 2007. Chosen works will need to be delivered to the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art between May 21 and June 1, 2007.
No slides or hard copy materials will be accepted for this project. First-time applicants must allow enough time to prepare their images to specification and to finalize the electronic submission prior to the midnight on December 8. First-time applicants will need approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to prepare images and submit an application.
Perspectives will be on view June 22 - September 9, 2007. Perspectives is sponsored by the Hohenberg Foundation, Inc.
