Jackson Pollock, No. 5, 1948.
|
NEW YORK.- The New York Times reported that a Jackson Pollock painting sold for around $140 million, which would make it the highest price ever paid for a painting. The New York Times reported that David Geffen sold the work titled "No. 5, 1948" to Mexican businessman David Martinez with the help of Sotheby's Tobias Meyer. Last June Gustav Klimts portrait sold for $135 million to Ronald S. Lauder, which currently holds the world record for most expensive work. According to The Times Martinez has purchased works by Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko recently. The sale has not been confirmed by Geffen, Martinez or Tobias Meyer. The work "No. 5, 1948" measures 4 by 8 feet and features Pollock's drip-and-pour style in a tangle of red, yellow and blue.
