ARLES.- Multidisciplinary artist Marie Capesius has been awarded the 2025 Luxembourg Photography Award Mentorship, a prestigious program that will support her exploration of ancestral memory and its influence on personal identity. The award, presented by Lëtz Arles in partnership with the École nationale supérieure de la photographie d'Arles (ENSP), offers Capesius a unique opportunity to develop her project, "DO THE LINES OF OUR HANDS RESEMBLE EACH OTHER?"
Capesius, born in Strasbourg in 1989 and currently based in Luxembourg, blends photography, writing, and sound recordings to create audiovisual experiences that delve into stories beyond the visible. Inspired by the Situationist concept of "dérive" (drift), she explores places rich with memory and transmitted histories, seeking to capture a sense of timelessness and connect viewers to a deeper, more subtle world.
Her winning project, "DO THE LINES OF OUR HANDS RESEMBLE EACH OTHER?", delves into the field of psychogenealogy, examining the unconscious inheritance we receive from our ancestors and how these buried influences shape our lives. Through an introspective approach, Capesius aims to create an audiovisual language that expresses the invisible and awakens the unconscious, offering viewers a new perspective on their own identities. She is particularly interested in visually representing aspects of human experience that are inherently unseen but profoundly felt.
The mentorship provides Capesius with invaluable resources and support:
A four-month research mentorship at the ENSP in Arles: This will provide her with expert guidance and access to the school's resources.
A residency in Arles in the spring: This will allow her to immerse herself in her project and connect with the local artistic community, with the support of La Madeleine Arles.
Two years of ongoing support from the Lëtz Arles team: This will ensure the long-term development and realization of her research.
The esteemed jury responsible for selecting Capesius included prominent figures from the art world: Julie Boukobza (LUMA Arles), Paul di Felice (EMOP Luxembourg and Lëtz Arles), Danielle Igniti (Lëtz Arles), Marlène Kreins (Oeuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte and Dudelange art centers), Delphine Munro (Casino Luxembourg and BEI Institute), François Quintin (Collection Lambert), and Véronique Souben (ENSP), under the presidency of Florence Reckinger-Taddeï (Lëtz Arles).
This mentorship, supported by the Oeuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte and La Madeleine Arles, marks a significant step in Capesius's career and promises to bring a compelling and insightful exploration of identity and heritage to the art world.
