BEDBURG-HAU.- Museum Schloss Moyland is honoring the legacy of Alice Springs (June Newton, 19232021) with a major retrospective featuring works displayed for the first time. The renowned photographer, who would have turned 100 last year, began her career under extraordinary circumstances in 1970 when she stepped in for her husband, Helmut Newton, due to his illness. Her debut assignment, a cigarette advertisement for Gitanes, launched her journey to becoming a leading figure in fashion and portrait photography.
In collaboration with the Helmut Newton Foundation and Opelvillen Rüsselsheim, the exhibition showcases 200 vintage prints and exhibition proofs. Visitors will explore a range of works, from intimate portraits to iconic fashion images, highlighting Springs' transformative impact on photography.
A key highlight of the exhibition is a collection of previously unseen works discovered in 2023 in the Newtons former Monaco residence. These newly unearthed pieces provide fresh insights into Springs' oeuvre, enriching her legacy with captivating new dimensions.
Alice Springs portraits span a remarkable range of cultural luminaries, including artists like Joseph Beuys, Peter Hujar, and Niki de Saint Phalle; fashion designers Vivienne Westwood and Karl Lagerfeld; and actors such as Catherine Deneuve and Charlotte Rampling. Her sensitive approach to photography captured not just faces but the personalities and emotions of her subjects, offering glimpses into their inner worlds.
In addition to her portraits, Springs also turned the lens on herself, documenting her own moods and physical transformations over time. Her works hallmark lies in its ability to encapsulate fleeting moments and preserve them as lasting memories.
Running concurrently, the museum also features an exhibition of works by the German-French photographer Willy Maywald, complementing the celebration of Springs artistry with another perspective on photographic innovation.
