The Prado Museum Board ratifies appointment of Alfonso Palacio as New Deputy Director of Conservation and Research

MADRID.- In a meeting this morning, the Prado Museum Board of Trustees, presided over by the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, announced key updates on the museum's recent activities, including a surge in exhibitions, educational and social programs, and visitor numbers. Minister Urtasun highlighted the importance of prominent institutions like the Prado Museum as vital cultural engines for the nation.

The Board ratified the appointment of Alfonso Palacio as the new Deputy Director of Conservation and Research, following a proposal from Director Miguel Falomir Faus. This decision marks the conclusion of a transition that began several months ago, when former Deputy Director Andrés Úbeda announced his intention to step down and pursue the directorship of the Academy of Rome. Alongside Palacio, Marina Chinchilla will serve as Deputy Director of Administration, completing the museum’s senior leadership team.

During the meeting, Falomir expressed his gratitude for Úbeda’s dedication over the past seven years, noting, “Without his contributions, the museum's achievements in conservation and education, along with the success of the Study Center and exceptional temporary exhibitions, would not have been possible.” Úbeda will continue in his role until Palacio officially takes over in February. At that point, Úbeda’s new responsibilities in the Conservation Department will be outlined.

Alfonso Palacio, 49, brings a distinguished academic and professional background to the role. A Doctor in Art History from the University of Oviedo with honors, Palacio has served as Director of the Fine Arts Museum of Asturias since 2013. Prior to this role, he was an Art History professor at the University of Oviedo from 2006 to 2013. His research and numerous publications focus on contemporary art from Asturias, Spain, and beyond, covering key works and movements from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Under Palacio’s leadership, the Fine Arts Museum of Asturias has seen a remarkable rise in exhibition activities, featuring over 70 individual and collaborative displays with major museums worldwide. Additionally, the museum has hosted more than 125 events, including lecture series, classical music performances, and film screenings, and has gained recognition for its outstanding educational programs.

Among Palacio’s achievements at the Asturias museum is the successful first phase of its expansion in March 2015, followed by the comprehensive reorganization of the museum’s collections, restoration of historic buildings, and a second phase of expansion launched in 2024. His leadership was pivotal in positioning the museum as a leading institution in the national "Extended Prado" project, acquiring and showcasing 22 pieces on loan from the Prado’s collections between 2021 and 2024.

With Palacio’s appointment, the Prado Museum is set to benefit from his extensive experience and dedication to art conservation and education, further solidifying its role as a cultural beacon in Spain and across the globe.
