LÓDZ, POLAND.- Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź presents Photoimages. Plastic Gesture in Photography, on view through August 31, 2006. Józef Robakowski, a curator of this exceptional exposition, writes in the preface to the catalogue: “With this exposition, I confirm premonition of Urszula Czartoryska from her book Photography’s Plastic Adventures. Today, I am certain that such an artistic option exists and has a chance to develop in the future. This distinguished specialist on the matter of photography signaled this essential problem already in 1965. She based her opinion on the creative experiences of the international masters as well as Polish artists practicing this genre with a success. Her exceptional publication as for that period, covers among others: discussion on the works of Karol Hiller, Franciszka and Stefan Themersons, Bronisław Schlabs, Zdzisław Beksiński, Fortunata Obrąpalska, Marek Piasecki or finally Zbigniew Dłubak. Present collection of “photoimages” of brothers, Dariusz and Krzysztof Bieńkowskis from Łódź, has been shaping since three years with this key originating in the 60s – according to my suggestion.

After the first presentation of this collection during the 4th Biennale of Photography in the spacious halls of Stary Browar [The Old Brewery], opinions of the viewers were unambiguous – this unique set at this event in Poznań was remarkable. Currently after its broadening with works of five artists associated one day with extremely creative Zero-61 group in Toruń and with photograms of Jerzy Wroński, Wacław Szpakowski, Jadwiga Sawicka, Barbara Konopka, Mikołaj Smoczyński and Andrzej Golec, exhibition in Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź has a chance to make all of us realize an essential value of Polish photographic art that originates from so-called movement of “interpretative photography”, which its apogee reached at the turn of the 60s and 70s. Today, the “interpretative photography ” develops successfully in “photoimages” of among others: Zofia Kulik, Jarosław Bartołowicz, Katarzyna Kozyra and Artur Żmijewski.”

This is a group exhibition of photography of Wojciech Bruszewski, Zbigniew Dłubak, Andrzej Golec, Karol Hiller, Michał Kokota, Jerzy Lewczyński, Antoni Mikołajczyk, Andrzej Pawłowski, Marek Piasecki, Józef Robakowski, Zygmunt Rytka, Andrzej Różycki, Bronisław Schlabs, Wacław Szpakowski, Stefan Themerson, Jerzy Wardak, Wiesław Wojczulanis, Stefan Wojnecki and Jerzy Wroński.
