WEST YORKSHIRE.- The National Museum of Photography, Film and Television presents the exhibit Experience TV. From John Logie Baird's original apparatus to a Jim'll Fix It badge, Experience TV will contain many of the objects that make up the story of TV. Important televisions and studio cameras will sit alongside the likes of Wallace & Gromit and the Play School toys - reunited with their famous windows - to create the only gallery of its kind in Europe with hundreds of objects from NMPFT's collections on display. The production zone will include a working quiz show set, demonstrating everything from studio lighting effects to vision mixing while a virtual studio will allow visitors to find themselves in various scenarios that reflect modern TV techniques.
Kathryn Blacker, the NMPFT's Project Director for Experience TV, said "This won't just be an opportunity to enjoy some fantastic telly nostalgia - though there will be plenty on show. The gallery will also allow people to have a go in front of the camera and try behind the scenes tasks to really get under the skin of television. We also plan to have live interpretation and formal and informal workshops for people who want to take things a little bit further and participate in making their own TV."
In addition to half a million pounds (£500,000) of private sector funding from Bradford & Bingley plc, the project's major public sector funders include regional development agency Yorkshire Forward (£900,000), the European Regional Development Fund (£700,000), The Heritage Lottery Fund (£400,000) and the DCMS/Wolfson fund (£200,000). Experience TV is also supported by the BBC.
Mike Hammond, head of corporate social responsibility at Bradford & Bingley, said: "We are delighted to be playing a major part in this exciting new project. We have supported the Museum for a number of years and were thrilled to be invited to be involved in the new venture. Bradford & Bingley is committed to supporting the region and look forward to working with everyone involved in Experience TV over the coming months."
Tom Riordan, Yorkshire Forward Deputy Chief Executive, said: "Experience TV is an outstanding addition to the Museum which is already one of the region's leading tourist attractions. We are delighted to be able to provide significant financial support to make this happen and to make Bradford an even more intriguing city to visit."
Alison Biddulph, Director of the Objective 2 European Secretariat at Government Office for Yorkshire and The Humber said: "This is a unique project that will contribute to the development of Bradford by encouraging new visitors and investment into the city. It will strengthen the region's cultural assets, promoting a positive image of Bradford and generating direct economic growth. Together with projects such as Connecting the City, Experience TV will support the continuing regeneration of the city centre and surrounding district".
Fiona Spiers, Regional Manager for the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: "This fantastic project will bring the museum's collections to life for everyone to explore and learn about and we're thrilled to have been able to support it. It's a wonderful example of how the past can be opened up to the present, with the help of Heritage Lottery Fund money, to create an innovative project which can be enjoyed by everyone."
Deputy Director-General of the BBC, Mark Byford, said: "We are delighted to be supporting the Experience TV venture, recognising that the Museum is at the forefront of connecting the public with both broadcasting's heritage and its future."
