Vintage Victrola Phonograph.

FLINT, MICHIGAN.- The Alfred P. Sloan Museum presents the exhibit H.O.T - The History of Turntablism through August 27. Ever since Edison invented the phonograph, someone has entertained us with unique mixes of recorded music. That someone is the DJ. Turntablism is the history of disc jockeying, be it on a parlor victrola, over the radio, at a dance or performing in a techno club. It is part technology and part pop culture driven by artistic expression of the DJ creating a groove. Digital technology has enhanced the traditional spinning of the record platter to create a world explosion of do-it-yourself music making. One of the most prominent centers of the techno DJ community is here in SE Michigan.

This exhibit traces the parallel development of the 'turntable' equipment, mixing/looping and the DJ as artist through graphic panels, museum objects and video interviews. Visitors can become hands-on DJ's operating a 1917 Victor Talking Machine and a dual iPod DJ mixing board. DJ performances and workshops will be conducted in association with the H.o.T. festival, July 29, 2006, held in the Sloan Museum courtyard (details TBA).
