SAN ANTONIO, TX.- Artpace San Antonio has announced the selection for our Spring 2024 International Artists-in-Residence. Our Spring 2024 Guest Curator, Larry Ossei-Mensah, independent curator, writer, and cultural producer, has selected: Melissa Joseph(Brooklyn, New York), Patrick Quarm (Windy Ridge, Takoradi, Western Region, Ghana), and José Villalobos (San Antonio, Texas).
The Spring 2024 Resident Artists will begin their residency on February 5, with a Welcome Dinner on Thursday, February 8, from 68pm. Their exhibitions will open to the public on Thursday, March 28, and will be on view until May 19, 2024
Melissa Joseph is a New York based artist and independent curator. Her work examines themes of memory, family history, and the politics of how we occupy spaces. Joseph acutely surveys the labors of women, as well as her own experiences as a second generation American, and the unique juxtapositions of diasporic life. Josephs work has been shown at the Delaware Contemporary, Woodmere Art Museum, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Brattleboro Museum and Art Center, Jeffrey Deitch Projects, MOCA Arlington and List Gallery at Swarthmore College. Joseph has been featured in BOMB Magazine, Hyperallergic, Artnet, New American Paintings, Le Monde, CNN, and Architectural Digest. Joseph has participated in residencies including Dieu Donné, Fountainhead, the Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts, the Museum of Arts and Design and at Greenwich House Pottery in 2023. Melissa Joseph will be the National Artist for Artpaces spring 2024 residency.
Patrick Quarm (b. 1988, Ghana) graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting, and a Master of Fine Arts from Texas Tech University. Currently living and working in Takoradi, Ghana Quarms practice explores identity, focusing on the notion of cultural hybridity and social evolution. His paintings interlace cultural signifiers from different eras and communities into multi-layered works. Quarms paintings have been featured in Artnet, Forbs, ARTFORUM, and Hyperallergic. His work has exhibited internationally at institutions including the Gagosian, Moody Center for the Arts, the Trout Museum of Art, Rice University, Library Street Collective, K.N.U.S.T Museum, and the Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts. Quarms work is in several public and private collections which include the Syracuse University Museum and Kalamazoo Institute of Art collection. Patrick has participated as an artist-in-residence at the Red Bull Artist Residency in Detroit 2019 and the NXTHVN Fellowship 2020-2021. Patrick is the international artist in residence at Artpace in the Spring of 2024.
José Villalobos was born in 1988 and grew up on the United States and Mexico border in El Paso, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and was awarded the Artist Lab Fellowship Grant for his work De La Misma Piel at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Villalobos is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Painters & Sculptors Grant Award and Residency and the Tanne Foundation Award. His work has exhibited at the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio Museum of Art, NARS Foundation, the Mexic-Arte Museum, El Paso Museum of Art, El Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, and most recently at the Phoenix Art Museum for Desert Rider. Villaloboss work is included in the collection of the Dallas Museum of Art, Mexic-arte Museum, the City of San Antonio Public Collection, Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania, and Soho House International in Austin, Texas. José Villalobos is the Artpace Texas artist in residence in the Spring of 2024.

Artpace San Antonio is a nonprofit residency program which supports regional, national, and international artists in the creation of new art. As a catalyst for artistic expression, we engage local communities with global art practices and experiences. To date, Artpace has welcomed over 275 artists through its renowned International Artist-in-Residence program. Annually, Artpace hosts three residencies. Each feature one Texas-based artist, one national artist, and one international artist, who are selected by a notable guest curator. Each eight-week residency culminates in a two-month exhibition on site. The mission of this program is to provide artists with unparalleled resources that allow them to experiment with new ideas and take provocative risks.
