WASHINGTON, D.C.- The 10th iteration of the Washington Project for the Arts/Corcoran's biennial showcase of emerging artistic talent is currently on view at the Millennium Arts Center until March 30. The quality of survey exhibitions is almost inevitably mixed, and "Options 2002" is no exception. The works add up to an exhibition whose main strength is that it holds together so well, despite great diversity. Curator Victoria Reis (rebounding nicely from her uneven debut with the 1999 "Options") has come up with four Big Ideas that run throughout the show: Space, Place, Technology and Communication. While all of the 15 artists' works address one or more of these loosely defined issues on some another idea also is percolating here. Namely, the notion of the System. Whether they be biological or mechanical, rational or subconscious, perceptual or intuitive, systems are central to much of the work here.
