SHELBURNE, VERMONT.- The Shelburne Museum just opened the exhibit Simple Beauty: Paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe through October 31. Simple Beauty: Paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe exhibits some 25 works by one of the most admired American artists of the 20th century. Included are sublime landscapes of the American Southwest, breathtaking close-up views of flowers, abstract paintings, still-lifes, and city and farm scenes that are not widely known. Several works have rarely been on public view, and many date from the 1920s when the public was just beginning to recognize her importance as an artist.
The exhibition gives an overview of O'Keeffe's (1887-1986) work and highlights connections to American landscape painting, including painters represented in Shelburnes permanent collection such as Martin Johnson Heade. Works are on loan from museums and private collections throughout the U.S., including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Denver Art Museum, and The Baltimore Museum of Art.
