MEXICO CITY.- The legal battle for 39 works of art by Remedios Vario took a 180 degree turn when a Mexico City court decided against Spanish Beatriz Varo, nephew of the artist who is seeking to include this package of works in the inheritance of Remedios Varo. The announcement was made by Sari Bermúdez, president of the National Council for Culture and Arts, Walter Gruen and Alexandra Varsoviano.
The judicial process will have to be restarted as the nation did not have the opportunity to defend this matter. There is also new evidence that the works belong to the state of Mexico and the works will remain for now in the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City. The new evidence is a notarized contract where Remedios Varo gives Walter Gruen the works. The contract was found in the National Institute of Copyrights. The suit for the inheritance of Remedios Varo began in 1987.
