Quest for Equality: African American Pioneers in the Sport of Basketball.
|
BALTIMORE.- The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History presents the exhibit The Quest for Equality: African American Pioneers in the Sport of Basketball through July 7. From its invention in 1891, the game of basketball has been a sport African Americans have sought entry into from players on the court, to coaching the teams, to ownership of clubs. This exhibition provides a historical timetable of the pursuit of justice and equality that paved the way for todays player, coaches and owners. The story of African Americans in basketball is one of struggle, success, frustration, sacrifice, perseverance and achievement.
The Quest for Equality chronicles the many of the first and greats in the journey for equality both on and off the court while documenting how the NBA overcame discrimination while helping to foster improved race relations in all areas of American society.
The exhibit was created by the National Civil Rights Museum in partnership with the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame and is being presented by SouthWest Airlines and the NBA.
