Contemporary art sets the trend at Roland Auctions NY Two-Part June 30th/July 1st auction

GLEN COVE, NY.- Roland Auctions NY, having just recently launched monthly two-part auctions with this summer, kept up their current trend of Contemporary and Fine Art leading their sales. This was evident once again at their two-part June 30th and July 1st auction.

Along with the various top art sellers of the day, Roland offered another glimpse into the vast archives of the legendary Phyllis Lucas Gallery treasure trove of Salvador Dali prints, lithographs and etchings. The renowned gallery famously had exclusive North American representation of all original Salvador Dali prints, starting back in 1965. This auction presented and sold over 60 Dali pieces, all in the $300 - $2,000 range.

This particular auction was a treasure trove of moderately priced fine and contemporary art, with a great many top sellers seeing bidding quickly shoot up past the estimates.

In keeping with the trend of recent months, Contemporary and Fine Art makes a bold statement with a Walter Gay (American, 1856-1937) oil on canvas painting of an interior scene with grand design and decorations, signed lower right. [Art: 34" H x 27" W; Frame: 39 1/2" H x 32" W] selling for $15,000, a Hsiung Ping-Ming: Modernist Figure – Sculpture of a figure in metal, signed "Hsiung Ping-Ming, '59". [13 1/4" H x 6" W x 8" D]. Sold for $10,625, a Walasse Ting (Chinese, 1928-2010) "Beautiful Day" - oil on canvas a splat-style abstract depicting flowers, signed, dated '71, and titled on back. [Art: 17 1/2" H x 23 1/2" W; Frame: 24" H x 30" W] selling for $9375 and a Yun Gee (Chinese/American, 1906-1963) Nude Male Study - oil on board study of a nude male, seated, signed upper left in English and Chinese, in "OG" wood frame. [Art: 19 1/2" H x 23 1/2" W; Frame: 27" H x 31" W] went for $9,375.

Another beauty, a Francois Henri Morisset (French, 1870-1956) Reclining Nude, Impressionist portrait of a lady, circa 1900. Oil on panel. Signed, upper left. Label verso for Heydenryk Frame. [Sight: 7 x 9 1/2 inches; frame: 13 1/4 x 15 3/4 inches], sold for $4,000.

Complimenting the strong arts sales at Roland, A Tabriz Hadjijalili Carpet, with natural faded colors, medallion center with corner spandrels in blue and faded reds, double guard borders. [12 ft 4in x 18 ft 4in]. Sold for $6875 and a Steinway Grand Piano, Model L, serial number 225536. Built 1924. Plastic keys. With bench. [5 ft 10in L x 58 W inches]. Sold for $5,625.

Highlights from the Dali collection included the Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989) "Triumph of the Sea" - lithograph in colors on wove paper titled "Triumph of the Sea," pencil signed and numbered "112/150," 1965, with Sidney Lucas NY ink stamp lower left. Provenance: Phyllis Lucas Gallery, NYC. [26" H x 31 3/4" W], going for $1875, the Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989) "Jonah & the Whale" –etching with pochoir in colors on Arches paper titled "Jonah and the Whale" from "Our Historical Heritage" portfolio, pencil signed and numbered "369/400," 1975. Published by Amiel. Provenance: Phyllis Lucas Gallery, NYC.?[19 3/4" H x 26" W], selling for $812, "Changes in Great Masterpieces”, Five color limited edition etchings from "Changes in Great Masterpieces" series, pencil signed and numbered out of 350 editions. Includes: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Velasquez, Raphael. In various large format sizes. Provenance: Phyllis Lucas Gallery, NYC, selling for $1250 and the Philippe Halsman (Latvian/American, 1906-1979) - Gelatin Print, silver gelatin print titled "Dali Clockface," from the Halsman/Dali portfolio of ten photographs, 1953. Bears studio stamp on verso "Halsman/Dali - Copyright Philippe Halsman '81...," published in 1981, The Neikrug Press, edition 10/250. Provenance: Phyllis Lucas Gallery, NYC. [Photo: 12 3/4" H x 10" W; Sheet: 14" H x 11" W; Mat: 20" H x 16" W], selling for $1,250.

Jewelry standouts included an Antique Russian Diamond, Emerald & Aquamarine Pin, in the shape of a fly, stamped "56" for 14K gold, with "F.T." maker's mark. 12.7 grams, inclusive. Comes with box. [1 1/2" H x 1 1/2" W x 1/2" D], which went for $5312 and a Triple-Strand South Sea Pearl Necklace, 13mm average pearls, 18K gold clasp. [16 1/2 L inches], sold for $1875.

In furniture, Italian Rococo Painted Commode, Genoa, mid-18th century, with later marble top, painted with floral trellis design on the front and stylized ruins on the sides. [35 1/2" H x 50 1/2" W x 25" D] sold for $2812, while a Pair of Louis XV-Style Ebonized Commodes, 20th century, with marble tops, rocaille scrolling gilt bronze mounts and Chinoiserie details, in the manner of Jacques Dubois (French, 1694-1763). [34" H x 45 1/2" W x 17" D], went for $1500.

In the decorative arts arena, Roland offered a Chaumet Paris Clock & Armillary Sphere Centerpiece, Chaumet Paris large elaborate presentation piece made of gilt metal, malachite and red porphyry, on octagonal shaped base, with four quartz movements. [9" H x 10" W x 10" D], sold for $1,000, a Weller "Sicard" Vase, American early 20th century Weller vase, the iridescent body with floral decoration, signed "Weller Sicard" to side in script, marked "94" to base. [9" H x 4" Diam.], going for $812, a Tall "Schneider, France" Vase, Good metal and glass mounted "Schneider, France" vase, signed to side, with twin applied black glass handles and three mounted glass "cherries" to base, internally decorated. Circa 1920s-30s. [20" H x 6" Diam.], sor $562 and a Bronze Lioness by Thomas F. Cartier, Signed, A gold and bronze patinated French Art Deco bronze lioness, signed lower right. [11" H x 20" W x 6 1/2" D], which went for just $438.
