NEW YORK, NY.- Heller Gallery is now presenting ROTATIONS, a series of exhibits showcasing new and recent works from gallery artists including Pamela Sabroso + Alison Siegel, Morten Klitgaard, Anja Isphording, and Tobias Møhl. Since July 7th through September 22nd, four consecutive exhibitions will feature the diverse voices of these artists, designers and makers in the gallery program.

Pamela Sabroso and Alison Siegel’s exuberant, vessel-based forms take on the shape and surface structure of plants, fruits and vegetables, which they use to make their molds. While their pieces imprint as colorful, fresh and unconventional, and their sophisticated, labor-intensive process and skill level date-stamps their work, the two artists also channel a more essential creative freedom that recalls the early American Studio Glass practitioners’ exploration of glassblowing in the tumultuous Age of Aquarius. Pamela Sabroso holds a 2007 BFA in Crafts and Material Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University. Alison Siegel received her BA in English and Glass in 2009 at Alfred University. The two met, live and work in Brooklyn, NY.

Morten Klitgaard grew up in the harsh climate of coastal Northern Denmark surrounded by rugged wild nature and a consistent westerly wind, which taught him to appreciate very small details in the barren landscape. His work explores notions of place and reflects on the influential effects of nature on both the landscape and its inhabitants. His pieces appear weather-beaten, as if patinated by the rugged Danish coastal landscape of Klitgaard’s childhood. Oxides, metal pigments and ash are applied during the final heating process, causing the surface of the glass to effervesce and create intricate textures and patterns. The work obscures our perception of material whilst successfully honoring the traditions of glass blowing; it pushes the boundaries of contemporary craft and design. A graduate of the Royal Danish Design School on Bornholm, where one of his most influential teachers was artist and educator Jack Wax, Morten Klitgaard also trained with fellow Danish artists Tobias Møhl and Trine Drivsholm, as well as with Dante Marioni. His work is held in private collections as well as at public institutions such as the Glass Museum Ebeltoft and the Bornhom Art Museum in Denmark.

German artist Anja Isphording makes intimate-scale objects, which are tactile and rich with deeply saturated colors. Her glass pieces are reminiscent of basic molecular structures, honeycombs or coral reefs, but their biological reference remains ambiguous. She explores nature without ever literally reproducing it. Isphording studied in Germany and the Czech Republic. Her work has been exhibited in Europe and the United States. Her pieces are included in the collections of the Kunstmuseum Dusseldorf in Dusseldorf, Germany, Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia, and the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin, Germany as well as other public institutions. Isphording lives and works in Canada.

Tobias Møhl is a modernist who creates elegant vessels, understated in both form and color - complex but never flamboyant. As the New York Times critic Roberta Smith wrote in a review ‘the work of Tobias Møhl, a Danish glassmaker, impresses sotto voce with small bowls crisscrossed with infinitesimal threads of color.’ Combining an extraordinary technical mastery of his craft with an exquisite level of taste, he successfully translates a historically Italian glass-making idiom into his own, distinctly Scandinavian voice. Møhl’s work is included in collections of the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY; Memorial Art Museum, Rochester, NY; Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY; the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, Germany; The Danish Museum of Decorative Art, Copenhagen, Denmark and other public and private collections in the USA and Europe. A studio artist and teacher, Tobias Møhl works and resides in Ebeltoft, Denmark.




Heller Gallery, founded in 1973 in New York, provides a curated platform for studio artists whose practice incorporates glass and whose work with the material broadens the horizons of contemporary culture.
