NEW YORK.-Phillips de Pury & Company is pleased to present a various owners sale of 20-21st Century Design Art on December 8th, 2005 at 2 pm at their Chelsea headquarters in New York. The sale offers a wide range of design from the most important movements of the 20th Century, and a thrilling view into the 21st Century. On view from December 3rd to the 8th, the exhibition shows the scope of Classic modern design through to present day works.

This important auction begins with early works by Carlo Bugatti and Paul Follot, and progresses into important pieces from the Bauhaus. The sale also offers a striking selection of designs by French, American and Italian designers. The Art Deco period is represented by a rare and beautiful enamel and lacquer bracelet designed by Jean Dunand ($40,000-45,000), and an important teapot by Jean E. Puiforcat ($25,000-35,000), which illustrates the refinement and elegance of the period. An important group of work by La Maison Desny is also represented, including a rare box by Robert Mallet-Stevens ($40,000-50,000). A unique and exceptional 1930s prototype lounge chair designed by René Herbst from his apartment ($40,000-60,000), and an important jardinière designed by André Sognot and Charlotte Alix from the Wolfgang Joop Collection ($25,000-30,000), all define the importance of the French modernists.

Expected to generate significant interest, is a rare and important bar designed by Jacques Adnet from the office of the president of Sud Aviation ($100,000-150,000), also from the Wolfgang Joop Collection. A highlight of American design in the sale is a rare Marshmallow sofa by George Nelson, in original un-restored condition ($80,000-120,000). Italian design from the 1950’s is represented by a selection of remarkable pieces, such as a fine and impressive dining suite by Carlo Mollino, as well as an important bookshelf designed by Joe Colombo for Giginia and Enrico Baj, which was Colombo’s first furniture design ($40,000-60,000). Design from the 1960s is symbolized with an exciting range of pieces by the Colombo brothers, including a “Personal Container” by Joe Colombo ($50,000-70,000) and collection of unique kinetic works by Gianni Colombo, such as “Pulsante” ($20,000-30,000). The 1970s are well represented by acclaimed designs such as Maria Pergay’s “Ring Chair”($40,000-60,000) and Serge Mouille’s medium “Signal” light ($70,000-90,000). The sale concludes with a survey of important design from 1990s to present, with major works from acclaimed designers Scott Burton, Marc Newson, Patrick Norguet, Tord Boontje and Yves Béhar, including an important prototype “Aqua Table” by Zaha Hadid ($250,000-350,000).
