Modern sets the stage at Roland Auctions NY on January 7th

GLEN COVE, NY.- A superb selection of Contemporary Art and Mid-Century Modern furniture took center stage at Roland Auctions NY first auction of the New Year on Saturday, January 7th in Glen Cove, NY, with a beautiful oil on canvas by artist Martiros Saryan (Armenian, 1880-1972) being the high seller of the day. The sale also featured works by D*Face, Andy Warhol, KAWS, Dale Chihuly, Lucio Fontana, Flo Perkins and DAIN, along with hundreds of lots of Fine Art, Decorative Arts, 20th Century Modern, Antique & Vintage Furniture, Textiles, Silver, Gold, Jewelry, Rugs, Collectibles, and Asian Art.

The top seller was the Martiros Saryan (Armenian, 1880-1972): Mountain & Valley Landscape oil on canvas painting of a mountain and valley landscape with oxen and plow in the foreground, signed lower left and dated, 1921. With provenance certificate. [23 1/2" H x 19 1/2" W]. With a much lower estimate of $10,000-$15,000, bidding quickly shot up and sold $40,625.

Also doing well in the Art arena were the Jean Dufy (French, 1888-1964) oil on canvas painting titled "Clown", signed lower left with labels to reverse. [Sight: 16 1/4" H x 8" W; Frame: 23 1/2" H x 15 1/4" W], selling for $5,000 and a Gayane Khachaturian (Georgian-Armenian, 1942-2009) - Musician with Onlookers - O/C, Gayane Khachaturian (Georgian-Armenian, 1942-2009) oil on canvas painting of a female musician with onlookers, signed lower right. [20" H x 13 1/2" W], which sold for $4375.

Decorative Arts also shined, with an exquisite Dale Chihuly (American, b. 1941): "Imperial Iris Persian" sculpture, two-piece purple sculpture with green lip, smaller piece monogrammed and signed, pp. 99. [Outer piece: 8" H x 11 3/4" W x 12" D; Inner piece, approx.: 1 3/4" H x 4 1/2" W] sold for $4375 and a Mary Ann "Toots" Zynsky (American, b. 1951) "Filet-De-Verre" Multicolor Glass Vessel, a multicolor "filet-de-verre" vessel, fused and thermoformed glass threads; "Z" monogrammed. [9 1/2" H x 4 1/2" W, sold for $7,500 and an 18th Century framed silk embroidery of an altar frontal. [Art: 36" H x 70" W; Frame: 42" H x 96" W]. Sold for $ 5,937.

In addition, Small Muller Freres French Cameo Glass Vase, Small Muller Freres French cameo glass vase, with butterfly and pine cone motifs; signed to body "Muller Fres Luneville". [4 1/2" H x 2 7/8" Diam.] sold for $2,125 and a Le Coultre Swiss Marina Angel Fish Clock, having 16 jewels with gilt metal decoration and stepped base, signed to face and movement. [7 7/8" H x 7 1/8" W x 1 3/4" D] sold for $1125.

Also making a prominent showing at this month’s auction, Roland presented an impressive Mid-Century Modern furniture selection including an Adrian Pearsall walnut "Crescent" lounge chair and ottoman, mid-century modern design with "grasshopper" arc legs around the recently upholstered Hallingdal upholstery, labels to underside; model 748-LB and 748-FS for Craft Associates. Rare to be offered with its ottoman. [Chair: 30 1/2" H x 26 1/2" W x 50" D; Ottoman: 12" H x 26 1/2" W x 16" D], which sold for $4,062, a Warren Platner for Knoll "Throne" lounge chair, mid-century modern design with molded shell seat, over a steel rod cage base; label under cushion. [39" H x 40" W x 37" D], selling for $3,750, a pair of Milo Baughman Swivel Lounge Chairs, Circa 1970s, Milo Baughman swivel lounge chairs, circa 1970s, mid-century modern design with blue upholstery to the swivel and tilt action seats. [34 1/2" H x 30" Diam.], going for $4,375 and a Danish Mid Century House of Finn Juhl Pelican Armchair, Lounge armchair with grey upholstered fabric, by House of Finn Juhl, Denmark. [29" H x 31" W x 33" D], which also sold for $4,375.

Rounding out the Mid-Century Modern offerings was a Paul Evans Brutalist Pedestal, Circa 1969, going for $5,937, a Gaetano Pesce "Feltri" Lounge Chair, Italian modern design with thick felted wool and black hemp cord trim to the pliable backrest, with rigid lower section. [39 3/8" H x 26 1/2" W (flexible) x 26" D], which sold for $2500 and a Vladimir Kagan Art Deco-Style Chaise Lounge, selling for $3125. Notable Antique furniture included this rare 19th Century French Vernis Martin Vitrine, Antique 19th century French gilt decorated curved panel single door vitrine / display cabinet. [54" H x 43 1/2" W x 17" D], which sold for $2250.
