SHANGHAI.- Zhu Peihong was born in Shanghai in 1987 and graduated from the printmaking department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2014 with a master’s degree. The artist now lives and works in Shanghai. His works were exhibited in the group exhibition Mind Image at Pearl Lam Galleries Shanghai this year and are currently on view in Reclusive Means in the Hong Kong gallery space.

The artist began his signature My Space series in 2010. The works focus on the dots, lines, and colour patches that flash in the picture in the process of creation as well as the traces left on the picture due to their convergence and dissolution. In this creative process, the strokes overlap and cover each other, and the paint slowly and repeatedly drips and spreads, solidifies and stops, until these fragmented traces, reaching an internal order, organically connect with each other and construct the conscious cyberspace perceived by the artist’s mind.

In 2020, Zhu and architect Lilyo co-created Space O, an abstract dynamic air dome installation. This creation uses virtual reality technology to replace brushes with handles and canvas with the sky, releasing the magnificent colour energy existing in the universe based on interdisciplinary research. The artist combines art and technology to build a channel between virtuality and reality, connecting it with our world.

Zhu Peihong’s works have been exhibited at China Art Museum, Today Art Museum, Beijing Minsheng Art Museum, CAFA Art Museum, Sydney White Rabbit Museum, Sydney University Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum, Niandai Gallery, Kommunale Art Museum in Germany, and Diekirch Art Museum in Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. His works are also in the collections of important international institutions such as the White Rabbit Art Museum in Australia, the German-Chinese Cultural Exchange Foundation in Germany, the Art Museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and the Printmaking Center of Today Art Museum in Beijing.

Artist Statement
My Space draws inspiration from my childhood memories of the city. The neon lights, advertising boards, and the actual world seem to send me messages all the time. I don’t understand why I create works in this way and I don’t know what the act of the painting means either.

In the continuous process of learning and thinking, I realised that the creation process is more important than the result. I didn’t plan the art-making process of My Space. I just let this series come naturally. For me, it is an experience that travels through time and space. When I start creating, the colours act like galaxies in the universe to cross my mind and resonate with me. They gather, dissipate, and finally achieve an inner balance, order, and state.

In addition, I have been exploring how to form a new space between myself and painting. I developed a new way of thinking about art, which has also led me into another time and space.

In 2020, I started to explore generative art, moving from canvas painting to AI technology. I think the future of art is about the artist themselves. Artificial intelligence allows my creations to enter the virtual space without limitations. I have more time and can focus more attention on my creations.

I broke the boundaries of three-dimensional space in reality through technology. In that space, there is no ceiling, no edges, and no gravity. My studio has built a virtual studio and a virtual creation system. In 2021, we created Mix Space, The Age of Illusion and Inflatable Park, all of which have been presented in our virtual studio.

Moving from painting to virtual art brought me into another space. What is next moving forward from the virtual?

Thus, Space O was born.
