Everyone in the American movie industry dreams of winning an Oscar. Academy voters are yet to decide who will be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar but you can bet theyll have one hope for next year. That being, the talk after the ceremony will be about the films not what happens on stage.
There are already odds available on who will win the Best Picture Oscar in 2023. American sportsbooks are a good guide as to which movies might be successful, though of course shocks can happen. Together with
the BetMGM NY guide lets look at those who are the favorites in the betting market.
TOP 5 Odds to win Best Picture at Oscars 2023
1. The Fabelmans + 120
2. Babylon + 500
3. Everything Everywhere All at Once + 600
4. The Banshees of Inisherin + 800
5. Women Talking + 1000
The Fablemans
Whether its ET or Indiana Jones, a Steven Spielberg movie is always successful. This movie though is a little bit different. No aliens or adventurous archaeologists but instead a partly autobiographical movie by this legendary US movie maker.
Movies of this nature are always good bets for Oscar success. This is based on the childhood of Mr Spielberg in Arizona from the ages 7 to 18. Spielberg co-wrote the screenplay and winning another
Oscar statuette may well be worth betting on.
Everything Everywhere All at Once
Its not just Marvel films that feature the multiverse. This US movie does too but there are a lot more laughs than in a Doctor Strange release. It stars Michelle Yeoh who is one of the favorites to win the Best Actress Oscar. She plays a woman being audited by the IRS but dont worry this isnt a horror movie even if Jamie Lee Curtis also appears.
The big discovery she makes isnt a few wrong figures or some checks that cant be accounted for. Its far more complex than that.. Her discovery is that it is necessary to connect with some versions of herself in a parallel universe.
Doing so will stop the multiverse being destroyed. It might be a gamble betting on a film that features animation, the martial arts, sci-fi and black comedy to win an Oscar but its one of the favorites with the bookies.
Babylon
When it comes to winning a Best Picture Oscar, films set in the past have done well. Babylon is high in the betting market and this story set in 1920s America looks one that wagers on could be successful.
Hollywood also loves looking back at its own history. This movie is set in the period in the US between the silent movies and the arrival of the talkies. Its another American movie that has a stellar cast with the likes of Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie (a strong contender for the Best Actress award) and Diego Calvin among those appearing. Theres even Tobey Maguire as Charlie Chaplin which is about as far away from Spiderman that you can get.
Tar
Dont bet on this coming to a sticky end. It stars Cate Blanchett as the composer and conductor Lydia Tar. It received a fantastic audience response at the Venice Film Festival held in September. Blanchett is another who is one of the favorites with US online bookmakers to win the Best Actress Oscar.
She Said
Movies that are based on real-life events are often big hits with the Academy voters. This movie is favored by online sportsbooks and its easy to see why. Its based on the Jodi Kantor and Meghan Twohey book. The pair of New York Times journalists were responsible for exposing the truth about the now disgraced Harvey Weinstein.
Many in the American movie industry will feel rather uncomfortable about the subject matter of this movie. There are excellent performances by Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan and it deserves to receive recognition but betting on it to win the Best Picture Oscar might not be met with success.
Amsterdam
Being nominated for a Best Picture Oscar is great news. You can bet that not winning is a real slap in the face. That neatly brings us to Chris Rock who appears in the movie Amsterdam. Anyone betting on him to host the 2023 Oscar awards after what happened this year have been disappointed. He could still have the last laugh though. Its safe to go there though as Will Smith definitely isnt going to be attending. He wont be going to an American movie awards ceremony for a while.
Amsterdam is a period mystery-comedy which doesnt sound like the usual Oscar winning movie. It has a star-studded movie with Robert De Niro, Christian Bale, Taylor Swift and Mike Myers (when will we get Austin Powers 4?) all appearing. Films with a cast list like that and receive good reviews have to be on any shortlist.
Avatar: The Way of Water
Sequels are never easy to make. Will the movie live up to the first one that was made? It's been a long time since the release of Avatar but considering how high the checks were that were earned. It was an easy bet to make on another movie being made.
Betting on this to win the Best Picture Oscar doesnt look advisable. It may well be a different story though when it comes to the technical awards where it will be among the favorites for success.
