Americas Society to Reveal the Future with Jodorowsky

NEW YORK.-The Americas Society presents Alejandro Jodorowsky, a well known figure in the study of divination, on November 3 and 4 as part of the organization’s 40th anniversary celebration. “This fall, the Americas Society salutes the hemispheric visionaries who premiered pivotal works within our art galleries, concert halls, literary salons, and pages of Review magazine over the past four decades,” said Tess O’Dwyer, Vice President for Cultural Affairs and Development of the Americas Society.

“We are pleased to introduce New York audiences to the psycho-magic world of legendary artist and cult figure Alejando Jodorowsky, whose multifaceted career spans experimental film and theater, mime, comics, and the art of Tarot”, added O’Dwyer.

Born in Chile in 1930, Jodorowsky participated with Nicanor Parra and Enrique Lihn in artistic actions called ephemerals, which later became known as happenings. In 1953, he moved to Paris where he co-founded the Panic Theatre with Fernando Arrabal and Roland Topor. He has also lived in Mexico where he directed experimental theatre and began his film career. He directed The Rainbow Thief, featuring Omar Shariff and Peter O'Toole, and he performed as mime artist with Marcel Marceau. He wrote more than thirty comic books with the likes of Moebius and Bess, and is considered a major figure in the study of divination. He has come to believe that the Tarot reveals more about one’s present state than one’s future, and from this perspective, the Tarot is a mirror of one’s self.
