NEW YORK, NY.- Hannah Traore Gallery is presenting LAUNDRY 002 - A Thread Is A Vein, the first U.S solo exhibition of artist Moya Garrison-Msingwana, on view from September 15-November 10, 2022.

Garrison-Msingwana is a Toronto-born and based artist and illustrator exploring themes rooted in fashion, pop culture, the absurd and the supernatural world. Working across many different mediums - including painting, sculpture and digital rendering - he uses this entirely new body of work to paint his way into a new reality.

LAUNDRY is a series predicated upon a fictional premise; one in which clothing possesses minor sentience. PILES are the inhabitants of this world, which Garrison-Msingwana describes as a post-human and garment hybrid. In this uncanny universe, fabrics and textiles attempt to adopt and display a suitable identity for their human frame.

In his own words: “I love how fashion amplifies or changes the architecture of the human body. The shapes and structures are fascinating to me; fashion is an art form that’s become so ingrained in humanity.” - Moya Garrison-Msingwana

Presenting 12 paintings at varying scales, Garrison-Msingwana displays a unique conceptualization of clothing, free from the limitations of physical materials. Garrison-Msingwana is a storyteller who has proven a mastered understanding of myriad dimensions of physical phenomena in each individual painting. This new body of work, presented for the first time, takes a deep dive into our culture’s obsession with fashion, privilege and vanity, acting as a mirror for the assumptions and judgements that we place on ourselves and others.

Moya Garrison-Msingwana is a Toronto-born and based artist and illustrator. His work explores themes rooted in fashion, pop culture, the absurd and the supernatural world, telling stories through images that subvert everything from playful interactions to social issues.

Garrison-Msingwana has a deep infatuation with form and character; his work - whether comics, drawings, editorial illustrations, murals sculptures or zines - often portray the human body as the core means of communication. Proficient in traditional painting and digital rendering, his painterly style is easily identifiable and engaging. Outside of his personal practice, Garrison-Msingwana has collaborated with brands such as Adidas, Google, Loewe, Stussy, North Face and XL Recordings.
