2005 Cultural Affairs Fall Season at Americas Society |

NEW YORK.-Americas Society celebrates its 40th Anniversary this fall with a retrospective cultural series. "Americas Society salutes the hemispheric visionaries who premiered pivotal works within our art galleries, concert halls, literary salons, and pages of Review magazine," said Tess O'Dwyer, Vice President for Cultural Affairs and Development. "For four decades, Americas Society has encouraged cultural exchange across vast temporal and geopolitical landscapes, thereby redefining the canon, often creating the market, and always capturing the imagination," added O'Dwyer.
In addition to retrospective art and literary exhibitions and publications, Americas Society is pleased to continue its popular new series "Tradition and Transformation: Jewish Culture in Latin America." Highlights include: the exhibition "José Gurvich, Constructive Imagination"; a concert by Ensemble Sospeso; and a discussion on Hybridity and Diaspora: Gego, Aizenberg, Gurvich, Schendel, and Segall. The series commemorates the 350th anniversary of the emigration of twenty-three Sephardic Jews from Recife, Brazil to New Amsterdam (now Manhattan) and their establishment of New York's first Jewish community.
