WAKEFIELD, ENGLAND.-Yorkshire Sculpture Park is proud to announce an exhibition of the internationally renowned artist James Turrell. The exhibition which opens on 5 November and continues to 14 May 2006 will present a series of powerful light installations in the new 600sqm Underground Gallery. YSP is also working with James Turrell on a new site specific commission in the landscape which will be unveiled in Spring 2006.

James Turrell uses light to make sculpture. To him light is the material capable of transforming all others and he uses it to work the medium of perception. A series of his light projections will transform the Underground Gallery into wonderful colour, light and space installations. The exhibition will feature ‘Wide Out’ which was originally created for MAK in Vienna, Austria in 1998 and will be seen for the first time in the UK. This piece envelopes the entire gallery space and viewer in a blue radiance, recreating a ‘ganzfeld experience’ where atmosphere diversity and the powerful mass of light gradually become physically felt.

Turrell combines the objectivity of a scientist and the creativity of an artist . After studying psychology, astronomy and geology James Turrell then studied the visual arts and in 1966 became involved in the Los Angeles County Museum Art and Technology Programme. James Turrell is a pilot and his study of perception and the science of light is extended through his experience of flying. James Turrell’s other passion is his thirty year ambitious project to convert the Roden Crater in the Painted Desert of Arizona into the largest natural light sculpture.

Over the last ten years Turrell has developed a special relationship with Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The exhibition gives an exciting introduction to Turrell’s work and will provides a memorable experience that is not to be missed. The exhibition will be open daily from 10-4pm. Admission is free.
