| Lasting Impressions: Celebrated Works |

William Blair Bruce, Phantom Hunter (detail), 1888.

HAMILTON, CA.-The Art Gallery of Hamilton presents Lasting Impressions: Celebrated Works from the Art Gallery of Hamilton. Lasting Impressions presents the very best of Hamiltons holdings of historical art suitably bracketed by two powerhouses, William Blair Bruces Phantom Hunter (1888) and Alex Colvilles Horse and Train (1954). While providing an impressive group of works that reflect the very core of the Canadian collection, the exhibition also offers sideways glances at American, British and French art. Deftly tracing the evolution of modernism in Canada, the works in the exhibition speak eloquently of the various artistic movements that defined Canadian art over a period of several decades. From the sun-lit impressionism of Helen McNicoll to the charged fauvism of Emily Carr, from the bushwhacking ambitions of the Group of Seven to the urban realism of Philip Surrey, the exhibition provides a rich, and at times surprising, journey through the heart of the modern movement in Canadian art. This project has been made possible in part through a contribution from the Museums Assistance Program, Department of Canadian Heritage.
