NEW YORK CITY.- The XX edition of the Biennial of the Whitney Museum of American Art was just inaugurated, presenting the works of 113 artists from 23 countries. A tree of stainless steel planted in the heart of Central Park, a work by sculptor Roxy Paine, served not only the new mayor, Michael Bloomberg, to mark distances with his predecessor Rudolph Guliani in all matters concerning art, but also to inaugurate a biennial that for the first time, expands its space from the somber bunker of Madison and 75th street to the meadows and lakes of Central Park, where five artists have installed their creations. Apart from Roxy Paine's tree, there are works by Kiki Smith, Keith Edmier, Kim Sooja and Brian Tolle. The Whitney Biennial runs until May 26.
