2005 SculptureCenter Prize Awarded to Klara Hobza

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY.-SculptureCenter Executive Director Mary Ceruti announced that the 2005 SculptureCenter Prize is awarded to Klara Hobza. The artist will receive an unconditional award of $5,000.

A jury comprising Lynn Cooke, Curator at Dia Art Foundation, Laura Hoptman, Curator of the 2004 Carnegie International (Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh) and Drawing Now: Eight Propositions (The Museum of Modern Art, New York), and artist Andrea Fraser selected the winner from the artists exhibiting in SculptureCenter's current survey exhibition Make It Now: New Sculpture in New York. A private reception will be held in honor of the artist in the fall.

The SculptureCenter Prize furthers SculptureCenter's mission to encourage experimentation and innovation in contemporary sculpture. The SculptureCenter Prize is awarded to an under-recognized New York area artist who has produced a mature body of work and shows potential for further development.

Mary Ceruti, SculptureCenter's Executive Director, said, "The SculptureCenter Prize is intended to support work that, for various reasons, may not easily find audiences and markets in New York. Klara Hobza is a young artist whose work furthers the performative, social aspect of sculpture and we hope this award will assist her in pursuing her work."

The SculptureCenter Prize was established in 2000 with a gift from Jourdan Arpelle Ziegler and Henry Steinway Ziegler. Prior recipients have included Alan Finkel and Jimbo Blachly.
