NEW YORK, NY.- Anders Wahlstedt Fine Art announces Unicum, an exhibition featuring eleven works, seven artists, and five approaches to print-making. The show unites skilled print-makers - Mark Tobey, Frank Stella, Jim Dine, Elizabeth Murray, John Zurier, Kenny Scharf, and James Brown - to highlight the category of unique prints. Monotypes, trial proofs, and lithographs with hand-coloring are three of the techniques included in the exhibition.
John Zuriers 2017 monotypes emphasize a critical relationship between gesture and production. Monotypes require artists to transfer a painted surface - typically glass or metal - to paper before the image dries. The richness of Zuriers final print depends on his application of ink, pressure, and speed. Near-monochromatic prints featuring gestural brushstrokes accentuate the dynamic between Zuriers physical touch and proficiency of technological production.
Trial proofs serve as an opportunity for artists to adjust color schemes and compositional details before printing the complete edition. The prints reveal an artists process, providing viewers with the remarkable opportunity to trace revisions otherwise left in a print shop or studio. Each trial proof is unique, and their differences underscore the labor involved in print making. Color trial proofs by Mark Tobey, for example, stress the artists proficiency in color.
Jim Dine ruptures traditional limitations in print-making by hand-coloring his lithographs. In this way, he transforms a set of identical prints into a series of unique works. The subtle differences between the lithographs generate both cohesion and personalization.
Unicum is on view from November 3 - December 15, 2021.
