BERLIN, GERMANY.- On Tuesday, 10 May 2005, at 2 p.m., the ceremonies for the official opening of the Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe will take place on the Memorial grounds. The list of speakers includes the Director of the Foundation, Bundestag President Wolfgang Thierse, Dr. h. c. Paul Spiegel, President of the Central Council of the Jews in Germany, Prof. Peter Eisenman, Architect, Sabina van der Linden, née Haberman, a survivor of the Holocaust, living in Sydney, as well as Lea Rosh, Chair of the Association for the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.
Performing are the Young German-Polish Philharmonic Orchestra of Lower Silesia with soloists from the State Orchestra Berlin under the direction of Dan Ettinger, along with the choir of the Synagogue At the Sign of the White Stork, Breslau (Wrocław), and Cantor Joseph Malovany, Fifth Avenue Synagogue, New York, directed by Stanisław Michał Rybarczyk. For reasons of security and seating capacity, only invited guests can attend these ceremonies.
ARD, ZDF and Phoenix will broadcast the event live. From the morning of 12 May, after the construction fences have been removed, the Field of Steles will be freely accessible from all directions day and night. The subterranean Place of Information will be open from May 12 daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (last visitors admitted 7:30 p.m.) There is no charge for entry to the Field of Stelea and the Information Centre. Since the Foundation expects a great interest on the part of the public, we request that all visitors consult the web site www.stiftung-denkmal.de/visitorinformation for details before visiting the Memorial site.
A catalogue published by the Nicolai Verlag can be obtained in the Information Centre and in book shops. It contains important information on the Memorial and the exhibition in the Information Centre.
