Hindman Auctions to present Icons of Style: Summer Fashion & Accessories this June
Hermès Birkin and Kelly Group. Estimates range from $5,000-15,000.

CHICAGO, IL.- On June 3, Hindman Auctions will present Icons of Style: Summer Fashion & Accessories, which will feature garments ranging from as early as the 1850s, from the Tasha Tudor Collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, to 1980s Vivienne Westwood, through to contemporary Issey Miyake. A prominent collection of Hermès bags and accessories will be offered. The sale will also spotlight midcentury haute couture from designers including Christian Dior, Madame Grès, Cristóbal Balenciaga, and Yves Saint Laurent from the 1950s through the 1980s.

A session of impressive Hermès handbags will lead the auction. Among the selection is a group of bold Vibrato handbags, highlighted by a multi-hued Vibrato Snip Leather Kelly bag from 2001 (lot 29; estimate: $10,000-15,000). Other standouts of this selection are a beige and blue Birkin bag from 2004 and a Kelly bag from 2002 (lot 25 and 27; estimates: $7,000-9,000 and $8,000-10,000). Modern examples from the session are two Petit H Decoupe Cabas MM bags from 2015 and 2017, which were designed by Gustavo Lins, an acclaimed Brazilian artist and architect (lot 21 and 22; estimate: $3,000-5,000 and $2,000-4,000).

Following the handbags will be a session of historic dresses from the Tasha Tudor Collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Known for writing and illustrating children’s books including Mother Goose and Corgiville Fair, Tudor pursued an idyllic lifestyle on New England farms where her life of weaving, tending to animals, and baking bread also included centuries-old clothing such as the examples that will be seen in this sale.

Additional highlights include two Louis Vuitton travel trunks from the early 20th century (lot 292; estimate: $10,000-15,000). Five collections of fashion illustrations from 1938-1945 also comprise an outstanding lot (lot 62; estimate: $4,000-6,000). Other stunning garments include a Givenchy haute couture silk dress (lot 72; estimate: $1,500 - $2,500) and an Issey Miyake ensemble from spring/summer 2001 (lot 174; estimate: $1,400-1,600). Noteworthy accessories also include a whimsical Judith Leiber Chicago rhinestone minaudière, a custom commission that depicts the Chicago cityscape (lot 250; estimate: $1,000-2,000), and a Chanel quilted leather jumbo flap bag (lot 231; estimate: $2,000-4,000).

Bidding for the auction will begin at 10am and will be online only. Private previews of the auction will be available at Hindman’s Chicago office.
