LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.- The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles presents "H. C. Westermann," on view through September 8, 2002. This retrospective exhibition provides a comprehensive survey of H. C. Westermann’s highly original sculptures and selected drawings from the early 1950s to 1981. Throughout his nearly 30-year career, Westermann (1922-1981) maintained a unique vision, combining references to his own experiences, popular culture, film, and politics with unconventional materials. The first retrospective since his death, this presentation of approximately 120 objects incorporates works that have never been publicly shown, including 11 of the artist’s sketchbooks and several sculptures that were created as gifts for family and friends. MOCA’s presentation is specially designed by Los Angeles-based artist Billy Al Bengston, who was a leading figure in the 1960s L.A. art scene, and a friend and longtime admirer of Westermann.
