S.R. Crown Hall, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

CHICAGO.- Dirk Lohan, grandson of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, won a bid at an eBay auction to smash a glass window designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Dirk Lohan bid $2,705. The window is located at S.R. Crown Hall, a National Historic Landmark at the Illinois Institute of Technology and the smashing will take place May 17. The event will start a yearlong celebration of the building's 50th anniversary. Dirk Lohan is the co-founder of Lohan Anderson, a Chicago-based design firm.
Many consider this steel-and-glass building as one of Mies' best works. The auction at eBay ended April 22. It generated 55 bids with proceeds going to a $15 million restoration of the building. This pane of glass was not an original part of the building and was installed in the 1970s.
