KASSEL, GERMANY.- Documenta 11 opens today, on view through September 15, 2002. The fair brings together almost 120 artists from 40 countries. The theme for this edition is visual arts globalization. Almost thirty percent of the artists present were born in "third countries", something that had never happened. There are only two Spanish artists in this edition, the late Juan Muñoz and film director Pere Portabell. Documenta takes place every five years and this year focuses on immigrants, the poor, the homeless, as the more than 450 works of art show. Nigerian Okwui Enwezor is the first African curator for this fair. Enwezor stated that he remembered how in 1955 the first Documenta fair rescued artists that Nazis had turned away. He stated taht we now live in a place that produces "radical art and is radicalized."
