MUNICH, GERMANY.- Pinakothek der Moderne presents Thomas Hirschhorn - Doppelgarage, North Pole, South Pole, Not in My Name. »Doppelgarage« 2002 (double garage) is one of the central installations of the Swiss sculptor Thomas Hirschhorn (*1957). It is a hobby room, workshop, storage room and think-lab all rolled into one. The neon-lit interior shows a hilly landscape assembled from current newspaper clippings, formed into a collage on 4 tables upon which model trains chug along. With the simplest of means, a complex imaginative space is created in an extremely personal manner that deals with fundamental questions about political and religious violence, revenge and retaliation however without moralizing pretences. With its clear connections to Friedrich Nietzsche, »Doppelgarage«, is devoted in a series of five works to important philosophers. As with his other works, »Doppelgarage« can be understood as a metaphor for the meshwork of hierarchies and dependencies in our contemporary society. For the first time, three new sculptures by the artist will be shown.
