LONDON.- Phillips announced highlights ahead of the upcoming London Photographs auction. Comprising 173 lots, the sale offers classic 20th century photographs by Richard Avedon, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Helmut Newton alongside this edition of ULTIMATE with exclusive works by Herb Ritts, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Zanele Muholi. Artists debuting at Phillips this season include Jan Banning and Ayana V. Jackson. This sale will take place at 2pm BST on Friday 25 September at 30 Berkeley Square, London.
Yuka Yamaji, Head of Photographs, Europe, said, We are thrilled to present the 12th edition of ULTIMATE this autumn with an exciting selection of fresh-to-market works, ranging from 1970s Japanese photographs by Issei Suda and Ishiuchi Miyako to our cover lot, Zodwa, 2014, by Zanele Muholi, whom we are featuring ahead of the visual activists first major UK survey which is set to open at Tate Modern in November.
In this edition of ULTIMATE, 10 out of the 13 works on offer are fresh to market, including our cover lot, Zanele Muholis powerful portrait from the ongoing series Somnyama Ngonyama, Ruud van Empels first ever work in his seminal World series, Wolfgang Tillmanss investigation of the photographic paper, and two rare early prints from Ishiuchi Miyakos emotionally charged Apartment series. Fashion photography is represented with Herb Rittss era-defining portrait of five legendary supermodels and Steven Kleins unique, oversized diptych of his Good Kate, Bad Kate covers for W magazine. Debuting at auction is Dutch artist Jan Banning with his interpretation of Vermeer, featuring a Moroccan girl.
Featuring in this sale is a selection of Photographs from the Marie & David Cooper Collection. A powerful London lawyer specialising in property and planning, David Cooper was behind the planning permissions granted for Battersea Power Station and Arsenals move from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium. A self-professed mad art collector, Davids passion for collecting developed alongside his professional career. The remarkable collection amassed by David and his wife Marie, also a solicitor, ranges from Pre-Raphaelite paintings and Rembrandt Bugatti bronzes to rare books, art glass, gentlemens canes, cars and photographs, highlights of which will be offered in this sale. The 12 featured lots, spanning five decades, represent seven female icons in film, fashion and music including Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe, Raquel Welch, Audrey Hepburn, Faye Dunaway, Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse as captured by seven photographers from the 20th and 21st century.
Further sale highlights include Helmut Newtons Elsa Peretti as a Bunny, New York, 1975; and other iconic fashion images by Peter Lindbergh such as Milla Jovovich, New York, 1996 and Mathilde on Eiffel Tower, Rolling Stone, 1989.
