NORWOOD, NJ.- Sterling Associates, Bergen County, New Jersey’s foremost estate specialists, will offer a diverse 216-lot selection of fine art, furniture, jewelry and lighting at their Wednesday, February 12 auction. With a strong regional following and international bidders on several continents, Sterling Associates’ online-only sales are unique in that all goods may be previewed ahead of time at the company’s physical premises, although all bidding takes place remotely. Options include absentee, by phone, or absentee/live online through LiveAuctioneers or Invaluable.

The core of the auction comes from one major estate and includes midcentury furniture and European artworks acquired while the consignor lived in Paris. He is now returning to France and has chosen to sell his collection before relocating.

Several Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989) signed lithograph prints are included in the main collection. Coronation of Gala, a depiction of Dali’s Russian-born wife and lifelong muse, is an artist’s proof, estimated at $1,000-$2,000. A beach scene pencil-numbered XXVI is entered with a $600-$800 estimate. Others include Telephone Mou (Soft Telephone), numbered 43/150, $200-$300; and a colored lithograph print of two female nudes, numbered 7/250, $300-$600.

A signed oil-on-canvas by Sandu Liberman (Romanian/Israeli, 1923-1977) is titled Portrait of a Couple and is a sensitive portrayal of a young couple sharing a tender moment. Its framed size is 26 by 32 inches, and it is expected to reach $300-$500. Another European highlight is a 20th-century Paris street scene by Dutch artist Peter Motz (b. 1934-). The oil-on-canvas work is profusely illustrated with Parisian buildings, vintage cars, a streetcar, flower cart and pedestrians and has a framed size of 15½ by 18 inches. Like the Liberman artwork, it is estimated at $300-$500. A framed print of Marc Chagall’s colorful and appealing Affiche pour la ville de Vence, 1954, measures 24 by 20 inches and is modestly estimated at $100-$200.

An impressive selection of bronzes includes both European and American works, in a variety of styles. Antonin Mercie’s (French, 1845-1916) 19th-century sculpture titled Gloria Victis is incised with the artist’s signature on base. It stands 5 1/8 inches high and carries an $8,000-$12,000 estimate. A large Emile Louis Picault (French, 1833-1915) bronze titled Perseus and Pegasus with the head of Medusa is signed E PICAULT and inscribed Salon des Beaux Arts 1888. The 19-inch sculpture is cataloged with a $6,000-$8,000 estimate.

For the many collectors of Western bronzes, Sterling Associates suggests two handsome works by Jack Bryant (Texas, 1929-2012). His rugged depiction of a bronco rider, titled Man Breaker, is signed, titled and numbered 6/6 in the base, and stands 14½ inches high. Robbers Hill, nicely sized at 34 inches, is also signed and titled. It was purchased directly from the foundry and is marked as such. Each of the Bryant sculptures is estimated at $2,500-$3,500.

There are many other discoveries waiting to be made in Sterling’s online catalog. A few of the highlights are: an 18th/19th-century Italian carved Carrara marble religious sculptural relief of The Breaking of the Bread, $2,000-$3,000; a pair of French Maison Bagues crystal two-arm sconces with a parrot motif, $1,000-$2,000; a 30½-inch Elkington gilt-bronze with Baccarat crystal epergne centerpiece, $5,000-$7,000; an antique Welsh long-case clock, $3,000-$4,000; erotic books, and men’s wristwatches.
