AUSTIN, TEXAS.- The Austin Museum of Art presents Andy Goldsworthy, through February 20, 2005. Working alone, British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy collaborates with nature, creating sculptures that are both in and of a particular place. After spending time in a selected natural site, he collects materials from that landscape and creates temporary sculptural arrangements, leaving the forces of nature to finish them. Before they dissipate, he documents them in stunning color photographs.

The exhibition Andy Goldsworthy: Mountain and Coast Autumn into Winter reveals the full range of this noted artist through 34 large-scale photographs and descriptive, poetic field notes that document a body of work created in the mountains and along the seacoast of Japan during the autumn and winter of 1987. It also includes four sculptural works—two delicate leaf installations, a nine-foot line of colored river stones, and a monumental installation of sticks.

The Austin Museum of Art will also premiere Web Drawings: Austin, Texas, a small series of photographs of ephemeral sculpture made from reed and spider web that Goldsworthy created on the banks of Lake Austin during a visit to the capital city in September.

The exhibition will also include ongoing screenings of the film Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Working with Time, 2001. This intimate film documents Goldsworthy’s improvisational process. Andy Goldsworthy, Andy Goldsworthy: Mountain and Coast Autumn into Winter is courtesy of Haines Gallery, San Francisco, California, and the Artist. The Austin presentation is made possible through the generous support of Escobedo Construction LP. The Austin Museum of Art 2004-2005 Exhibition Sponsors are BMC Software, Berman Family Foundation, Dell, Rosemary Haggar Vaughan Family Foundation, Texas Commission on the Arts, The Austin Chronicle, News 8 Austin and Time Warner Cable.
