Franz Kline, Untitled, 1953, oil on paper. Collection of Susan and Larry Marx.

ASPEN, COLORADO.- The Aspen Art Museum presents From Pollock to Marden: Post-War Works on Paper from the Collection of Susan and Larry Marx, on view through February 6, 2005. Approximately 25 major drawings by some of the most important artists of the last five decades will comprise this exhibition, culled entirely from the collection of Aspen-based Susan and Larry Marx. The exhibition begins with an untitled drawing by Arshile Gorky executed around 1945 and spans through works of the late 1980s and 1990s by Brice Marden, Ellsworth Kelly, and Robert Mangold. The drawings—which include the mediums of pastel, watercolor, gouache, ink, colored pencil, charcoal, and oil paint—date from the end of World War II.

The collection is particularly strong in Abstract Expressionism and its variants, with important works by Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, David Smith, and Philip Guston, as well as the movements of Minimalism and Post-Minimalism, represented by such major figures as Agnes Martin, Sol LeWitt, Eva Hesse, and a body of works by Marden representing various periods of his long career. The collection is also rich in works by Pop Artists, such as Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and Ed Ruscha, and artists who prefer a figurative expressionism, including George Baselitz and Susan Rothenberg. A fully illustrated catalogue documenting both the exhibited works and others in the collection will accompany the exhibition. Organized by the Aspen Art Museum. Curated by Dean Sobel, AAM Interim Director/Chief Curator.
