Rago to sell over one hundred works of art from the collection of Allan Stone
Wayne Thiebaud (American, b.1920), Untitled (Figure), 1960. Ink on paper. Signed and dated, 26" x 40" (sheet) Provenance: Allan Stone Collection, New York. Estimate: $10,000 - $15,000.

LAMBERTVILLE, NJ.- On Friday, November 8 Rago brings to auction a significant collection of over 100 paintings, sculptures, mixed-media, and works on paper from the estate of art dealer and pioneering supporter of Abstract Expressionism, Allan Stone.

Over the course of 50 years, Allan Stone amassed a vast art collection of exceptional depth and diversity. A self-proclaimed ‘art-junkie’, Stone was driven by passion and by an unerring eye. He acquired works that spoke to him regardless of trends or differing opinions.

The Allan Stone Gallery, founded in 1960, was famous for welcoming artists into its fold whom other dealers had turned away, including Wayne Thiebaud and Richard Estes. A proponent of young talent, Stone is credited with giving many emerging artists their start. He was instrumental in the early careers of Eva Hesse, Jack Whitten, James Grashow and Lorraine Shemesh, among many others. Recalling Stone’s process for choosing pieces, Shemesh stated, “He could make a visual decision very quickly. It was like love at first sight. He trusted his instincts.”

Property on offer from the Collection of Allan Stone on November 8 includes works by Arshile Gorky, William de Kooning, Franz Kline, Wayne Thiebaud, Joseph Cornell, Lorraine Shemesh, Harry Bertoia, James Havard, Kazuko Inoue, James Bohary and Marisol Escobar.

Works from the Collection of Allan Stone will be offered within Rago’s Post War + Contemporary Art auction on Friday, November 8, lots 181-284. View the full auction catalog online now at ragoarts.com
