NEW YORK, NY.- Palaces of Prayer, an exhibit of 60 large-format color photographs of historic and contemporary American and Hungarian synagogues made by Hungarian-born architectural photographer Laszlo Regos opened an Internet virtual exhibition today. The real-world exhibition may be seen at the Angel Orensanz Foundation, in New York City through November 19.
Palaces of Prayer presents a showcase the diversity, beauty and exuberance of sacred Jewish architecture in America, and abroad, featuring synagogues by such renowned architects as Frank Lloyd Wright as well as structures like the magnificent Eldridge Street Synagogue, which was designed and constructed by Lower East Side tenement builders.
Regos, a native of Hungary, is a Detroit-based architectural photographer whose work has taken him around the globe and whose award-winning photographs have appeared in numerous prestigious design publications and in several books. The son of Holocaust survivors, and a grandson of those who perished in World War II, Regos' mission is to preserve in large format photographs the most significant American synagogues and to publish a book on the subject. He has photographed more than 70 synagogues, from the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Congregation Beth Sholom, in Elkins Park, PA, to New York City's Temple Emanu-El, Central Synagogue, Park East, and historic Lower East Side synagogues, including the Bialystoker, Eldridge Street, Orensanz Center, Stanton Street Community synagogues, Beth Hamedrash Hagadol, Kehila Kedosha Janina, as well as synagogues in Pittsburgh, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Harvey Friedrich, executive director of the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Beth Sholom synagogue, described Regos as a photographer with "an exceptional eye." "Laszlo looks at a building in ways other people do not normally see it. That is where his creativity really shines. Many of his synagogue photographs are breathtaking."
Palaces of Prayer is jointly sponsored by: the Eldridge Street Project, The Lower East Side Conservancy and the Angel Orensanz Foundation.
