Renowned Scholar Donald Cosentino at Frost Art Museum



MIAMI, FLORIDA.- The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum Wednesday After-Hours programming presents renowned author and scholar, Donald Cosentino on Wednesday, November 10th, 2004 at 7:00pm in the MARC International Pavillion at Florida International University. Highly respected for his extensive knowledge on Haitian art and culture, Mr. Cosentino is the catalogue essayist for the unprecedented exhibition, Lespri Endepandan: Discovering Haitian Sculpture currently on view at the Frost Art Museum. This event will celebrate the release of the highly anticipated exhibition catalogue which will undoubtedly become an invaluable contribution to the growing body of scholarly literature of Haitian art.

Mr. Cosentino, is a distinguished professor of Folklore, Literature, Visual and Material Arts, Popular Culture, African and Afro-Caribbean Studies at the UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures. He has done extensive fieldwork in African and diasporic cultures in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Haiti and is the author of several definitive books on the subject. Additionally Mrs. Cosentino is the curator of related traveling exhibitions including The Sacred Arts of Haitian Vodou (1995), a traveling exhibition which he curated for the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History; and more recently The Bicentennial of Haitian Independence: Saluting the Gods of Freedom, which he curated for the Fowler Museum of Cultural History, 2003-04.

A cocktail reception featuring the release of the exhibition catalogue will be held at the Frost Art Museum at 6:00p.m., the lecture by Mr. Cosentino will be held in the adjacent MARC building, room 290 at 7:00p.m. on Wednesday, November 10, 2004.
