CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.- The Artspace committee of University Programs Council is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of photographs by National Geographic photographers Kenneth Garrett, David Alan Harvey, and Michael Yamashita. Several of the images are on loan from the National Geographic Museum at Explorer's Hall. The exhibit opened in the Newcomb Hall Art Gallery and continues through Tuesday, November 30.

The show features Kenneth Garrett's photographs of Egypt which emphasize elements of its ancient, mysterious history and culture, David Harvey's photographs of Cuba, which capture moments of evanescent beauty and emotion amidst gritty urban surroundings, as well as the renowned work of Michael Yamashita.

Photographer Kenneth Garrett, whose photographs reveal ancient Egypt through a visual exploration of its remaining monuments and testaments, studied at the University of Virginia as well as at the University of Missouri. Concentrating his expertise in ancient cultures, Garrett focuses on archaeological and paleontological subjects. His work has led him to travel internationally and includes diverse collections of photographs published in various esteemed magazines including the Smithsonian, Fortune, Time and of course National Geographic. Many of the photographs on exhibition can be found in the National Geographic book Egypt of the Pharoahs.

David Alan Harvey specializes in Latin America, which he has photographed and studied for more than twenty years, principally for National Geographic. In 1996, he made his inaugural visit to Cuba and continued to return for more photographic opportunities. The photographs on exhibition in the Artspace gallery can be found in his book Cuba, published in 2000.

Michael Yamashita concentrates on Asia. He first began taking photographs in 1971 while traveling around Japan, an experience that sparked his passion for photographing Asia. He began working for National Geographic in 1979, employment that has led him from the Sudan to New Jersey, from Ireland to Singapore. His most celebrated work includes Mekong: A Journey of Mother Waters and In the Japanese Garden, which he co-authored with his wife.
