LARCHMONT, NY.- A wide-ranging auction will kick off the new year at Clarke Auction Gallery on Sunday, Jan. 13, at 10 am, featuring a sale to whet all appetites, featuring Oriental carpets, lighting, bronzes, Midcentury Modern, American and Continental furniture, sterling silver, designer jewelry and accessories.

The sale runs the gamut from a 1966 Pontiac GTO to a Pablo Picasso “Brilliant Owl” Madoura rectangular dish from 1955 having decoration in engobes in black, white, blue, and 12 ½ by 15 ½ inches. Both lots are estimated at $10/15,000.

“This auction will feature a number of important pieces across the board from fine art and sterling to jewelry, Asian arts, midcentury and decorative arts,” said owner and auctioneer Ronan Clarke. “From great objects to great designers — such as Tiffany, Cartier, Handel and Georg Jensen — this sale will appeal to many collecting interests.”

Fine art always performs well here and leading this auction are original paintings from Old Masters to contemporary artists, as well as as a fine selection of prints, multiples and works on paper. Leading the category are an Afro (Italian, 1912-1976) watercolor collage, “Stagione a Procida,” 1957, signed and dated and retaining a Catherine Viviano Gallery label ($15/20,000) and an oil on canvas attributed to Guy Pene u Bois ($10/15,000) of two women in a studio. The interior of the latter painting has been identified as William Merritt Chase’s studio in Shinnecock, N.Y., where du Bois was a student. Also expected to perform well are a Saul Steinberg (Romanian-American, 1914-1999) ink and watercolor on paper ($6/9,000), “Piazza San Marco, Venice,” circa 1950; and an abstract mixed media on newsprint laid on cardboard attributed to Willem de Kooning ($4/6,000).

For collectors who are interested in Chinese furniture, huanghuali furniture is highly coveted owing to its rarity and its aesthetic appeal. One expert speculated several years ago that there were fewer than 10,000 examples of this furniture remaining and the tree itself is a protected species. Distinguished by a yellow-red hue and a sweet aroma, huanghuali furniture is in high demand, which translates to robust prices. This auction will feature a pair of huanghuali and hardwood corner cabinets, Yuanjiaogui ($8/12,000), that have the traditional cabinet form but tapering slightly at top, with a single panel set within a rectangular frame over four legs of round section.

Like the above lot, Tiffany is also highly desirable. A Tiffany Studios “Acorn” table lamp having a 16-inch diameter ($8/$12,000), 20 inches tall, will light up the sale. Tiffany is well known for its floral and botanical-themed lamps but going back to the 1890s, its geometric designs such as the Japonesque “Acorn” lamps were in vogue. “Deceptively simple in appearance with basic geometric patterns, ‘Acorn’ lamps have long been popular with collectors and continue to bring good prices,” Clarke said.

The Tiffany name is also well represented in the jewelry category with a pair of Schlumberger for Tiffany 18K gold Acorn form cufflinks with pearl terminals and a Schlumberger for Tiffany sapphire coil ring, also in 18K yellow gold, having sapphire cabochon terminals. Both are estimated at $2/3,000.

Besides Tiffany, this auction is loaded with collectible designer names, such as Cartier. Crossing the block is a Cartier 18K gold and sapphire hinged cigarette case ($3/5,000) with an oval sapphire cabochon closure. Not Cartier but similar is an Italian 18K yellow gold woven case with channel set faceted sapphire closure stamped “750” and with an Italian national mark of “AL” signifying this piece was created in Alessandria.

Shining bright among sterling silver is a pair of large Johan Rohde for Georg Jensen serving trays, #642 ($4/6,000), having a slightly hand-hammered finish, in the Acorn pattern with seven applied acorn pendants to border of each tray.

Rounding out the auction will be a Gustav Stickley Mission oak two-door bookcase ($2/3,000), 60 by 13 by 56 ½ inches; a rare and signed Handel mermaid base floor lamp ($3/5,000) and a Midcentury Philip and Kelvin LaVerne signed bronze coffee table ($1/1,500).
