LONDON.- Tomasso Brothers Fine Art, renowned internationally for specializing in important European sculpture from the early Renaissance to the Neoclassical periods, and important works of art, is pleased to announce their second participation in Master Drawings New York, January 2019. The gallery’s exhibition, Scultura IV, will be held at Carlton Hobbs LLC, 60 East 93rd Street, on the Upper East Side.

A recently rediscovered Bust of Christ by Tino di Camaino (c.1285-c.1337), one of the most influential Italian sculptors of the 14th century, will be amongst the exhibition’s highlights. Tino belonged to a pioneering generation of Italian artists that included Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Cimabue, Giotto, Duccio, Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti, who arguably laid the foundations for the flowering of Renaissance art in the following century.

The attribution of this highly important marble Bust of Christ to Tino di Camaino is supported by two leading experts in the field: Dr Gert Kreytenberg, who wrote the authoritative monograph on the artist, and Dr Damian Dombrowski. According to Dr Kreytenberg, the Bust once stood on the north portal of Florence’s famous Baptistry, whist for Dr Dombrowski its original location was the monument to Emperor Henry II in Pisa Cathedral.

Tomasso Brothers will also present two important rediscoveries from the high-point of the Florentine Baroque. The first is a bronze figure by Giovanni Battista Foggini (1652-1725), the Medici Grand-Dukes official court sculptor and architect. Entitled Bound Captive, it is a powerful portrayal of emotion, and the only known bronze cast of this composition by Foggini. The second is a richly-coloured bronze representation of Castor and Pollux, after the celebrated ancient Roman marble statue now in the Prado Museum, by Massimiliano Soldani-Benzi (1656-1740), the son of an aristocratic cavalry captain who became Director of the Grand Ducal Mint in Florence, and whose patrons counted popes, kings and princes.

Tomasso Brothers will also present an exquisitely cast and rare gilt bronze figure of The Dying Gaul (After the Antique), attributed to the 17th century artist known as the ‘Ciechanowiecki Master’; and a beautifully detailed marble rendition of The Albani Faun (After the Antique) – a perfect embodiment of satyrs’ Dionysian spirit – attributed to the English neo-classical sculptor and co-founder of the Royal Academy of Arts Joseph Wilton RA (1722-1803).

Scultura IV continues a series of January exhibitions that have been presented annually in New York by Tomasso Brothers Fine Art since 2008, and which for the past two years have been part of Master Drawings New York. A catalogue will be published to accompany Scultura IV. (Prices are not currently available.)
