BREMEN.- The Kunsthalle Bremen is presenting a comprehensive exhibition by the artist and filmmaker Rosa Barba, supported by the Supporters’ Circle for Contemporary Art in the Kunstverein Bremen. Works from 2009 to 2018 will be on display, including projections and installations such as “Drawn by the Pulse” (2018), “From Source to Poem” (2016), and “The Color Out of Space” (2015), as well as new prints on canvas.

The work of Berlin-based artist Rosa Barba (*1972) is distinguished by her conceptual engagement with film. The exhibition will focus on her interest in the relationship between film, space and audience. Composition, physicality and plasticity play an important role in the perception of her work. Barba’s treatment of film is sculptural: By deconstructing elements of film, she creates fascinating kinetic objects and atmospheric spatial installations. Her work occupies an area between the experimental documentation of historical events and people, and fictitious narratives that take place in a timeless space. Using the camera like a drawing instrument, Barba investigates formal shapes and historic references and outlines places and situations. She then interweaves these stories into her own fictional narratives to open up new possibilities for interpretation.

Rosa Barba’s work represents one of the key positions in contemporary art and she has received international recognition. Numerous exhibitions of her work have been presented, including at the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid (2017), the Vienna Secession (2017), the MIT Visual Arts Center in Cambridge Massachusetts (2015), and the Tate Modern (2010). Currently, a solo show is on display at the Remai Modern in Saskatoon, Canada (2018). In addition, she has exhibited at the 32nd Biennale in Sao Paulo (2016), and the Venice Biennale (2009 and 2015). She has been awarded a number of international prizes and her work has been widely published. She is a Professor at the University of the Arts in Bremen.

Supporters’ Circle for Contemporary Art in the Kunstverein Bremen (Förderkreis für Gegenwartskunst im Kunstverein Bremen): The exhibition is made possible by the Supporter’s Circle for Contemporary Art in the Kunstverein Bremen. Since 1971, the Circle has funded an exhibition of contemporary art each year and supports the acquisition of works of art for the collection. The exhibition series has set benchmarks in art: The Gerhard Richter exhibition in 1973 was followed by presentations of works by Antoni Tàpies, Andy Warhol, Emil Schumacher, Georg Baselitz, Isa Genzken, Anna and Bernhard Blume, Norbert Schwontkowski, William Kentridge, Sarah Morris, Andreas Slominski, Thomas Hirschhorn, Mary Reid Kelley and, most recently, Fernando Bryce.
