RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL.- Multimedia artist Lygia Pape, 75, died in Rio de Janeiro. She was a founding member of the Neoconcrete movement in Brazil. In 1954 she helped found the Frente movement. This movement later merged with the Concrete movement. Brazilian art critic Mario Pedroso thought art should be constructed and geometric. He helped guide both movements. Lygia Pape later founded the Neoconcrete movement together with Brazilian artists like Helio Oiticica and Amilcar de Castro to try to make their works more formal. Lygia Pape also wrote the book “The Book of Creation” and “The Book of Architecture”. The Guggenheim Museum featured her work in 2001 in a survey of Brazilian art. Her work was seen in New York in "Body and Soul," a 400-year survey of Brazilian art at the Guggenheim Museum in 2001. Lygia Pape was born on April 7, 1927 in Rio de Janeiro. She studied a master’s degree of philosophy of art at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. She also taught semiotics at the school of architecture at the Universidade Santa Ursula in Rio. In 1983 she was appointed professor in the school of fine arts of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro.
