WASHINGTON, DC.- Weaving an Empire: Textiles of the Inka World reveals how Andean dress and other textiles in the 15th and 16th centuries reflected both the influence of the Inka—who built one of the world’s largest empires, rapidly expanding beyond the Cuzco Valley to occupy much of South America’s western region—and the local styles of communities under Inka rule. On view through December 23, 2026, this is The Textile Museum's first major exhibition of South American textiles in over 20 years. "The Textile Museum holds more than 9,000 Latin American textiles—one of the largest collections of its kind outside the region—and they account for nearly half of our 21,000 handmade textile works spanning five continents and five millennia," said John Wetenhall, director of The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum. VINELAND, NJ.- A hand-painted polychrome bronze sculpture by Stanley Wanlass (American, b. 1941-) depicting an early touring car overtaking a man on horseback sold for $34,800, and a handsome 1929 Franklin Series 11 sedan automobile chugged off for $13,200 at Bertoia’s August 28 Automobilia Sale. The auction featured automobilia items from the celebrated David Bausch collection, an exceptional assemblage encompassing more than a century of automotive history, advertising and design. Longtime car and automobilia enthusiast David Bausch’s collection is so massive, many of his treasures have been featured in seven auctions conducted by Bertoia’s. About half the items entered in the August sale were from his collection, all automobilia. They included posters, prints, enameled gas and oil signs; statuary, early automotive-themed objets de vertu and gentlemen’s dresser items, Roseville dishware and more. AMSTERDAM.- The Mauritshuis and the Rijksmuseum have jointly acquired Hendrick Avercamp’s Colf Players on the Ice, painted c. 1625. The acquisition signals the return to the Netherlands of one of the most important winter landscapes in Dutch painting. The 17th-century masterpiece will be shown first in Kampen, the town of Avercamp’s birth, where it will be on display from 3 October at Avercamp Back in Kampen: the 17th Century through the Eyes of Hendrick & Barent. It will then alternate between the Rijksmuseum and the Mauritshuis. The acquisition is an exceptional addition to the Dutch national art collection. ORLANDO, FLA.- The Mennello Museum of Art welcomes Abigail Baeza as Associate Curator of Art and Education, who will work with the team to help advance access to American art and its multiple narratives through curatorial research, exhibition-making, and new perspectives on American art history, our collection initiatives, and public engagement. Abigail joined the museum this summer and holds an M.A.R. (Master of Arts in Religion) from Yale Divinity School with a concentration in religion and visual art. Before Yale, she earned a B.A. with Honors in Art History from Stanford University. In 2024, she curated Color Deceives: Le Corbusier & Josef Albers, an exhibition spotlighting special collections items in Stanford’s Bowes Art & Architecture Library. DUBLIN.- Established in 2020, the Provost’s Fellowship in Curating offers recent graduates of Trinity College Dublin the opportunity to work within The Douglas Hyde over a period of twelve months. Through hands-on work and mentorship, the Fellow is given insight into the daily workings of the organisation and its programme, while contributing to discourses within the Gallery, Trinity College and further afield. The Fellowship, which is generously supported by the Office of the Provost, fosters new generations of arts professionals by giving practical experience of working within one of Ireland’s leading contemporary art spaces. RIGA.- From 16 September to 22 November 2026, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Riga hosts the exhibition Rūdolfs Heimrāts 100. Legacy, dedicated to the centenary of the outstanding textile artist Rūdolfs Heimrāts (1926–1992) who was professor at the Art Academy of Latvia and founder of the Latvian textile art school. “I love sitting at the loom and weaving. Everything leading up to that moment is filled with doubt and struggle. All kinds of possibilities surround me, and I could go on considering them endlessly, but once I am at the loom, I can honestly say that I am happy. I prepare for it almost as a ritual: I arrange all my materials, choose the records I want to listen to, and then, with the selected music playing, I weave thread by thread. NEW YORK, NY.- Tauba Auerbach is presenting a family of new works in various media, reflecting on currents and concurrence. These will include a new generation of pointillist paintings depicting liquid foams photographed through a microscope. Hand-painted dots gather into refractive images on sprayed panels that float slightly off the wall. Earlier works in the series looked at foam’s architecture; these focus on its interaction with light. Of the material, Tauba has said: “Foam often exists at an edge, like the edge of the ocean or the edge of a glass. It’s the unruly boundary between two domains (liquid and air), where order in the traditional sense breaks down, and a new type of organization emerges. MILAN.- The title of this exhibition – Smell of the Lawn – already suggests something that arrives before an image: a scent, a memory, the invisible trace of a place. In Hiramatsu’s paintings, too, recognition comes slowly. Figures, animals, and fragments of landscapes seem to settle onto the surface after the fact, as though they had been waiting inside the paint. A figure observes the hint of a poppy in Red Flower; a bird almost sinks into the dim ground of Life’s Stumbles; in At That Moment, a witch-like figure hovers at the edge of a swampy landscape. These images remain suspended just before they become fully legible, in the moment when a story seems possible but has not yet begun. Hiramatsu’s paintings develop through a patient, layered process. HELSINKI.- The Ateneum Art Museum, which is part of the Finnish National Gallery, has received a significant bequest of approximately 300,000 euros from a Finnish private individual. The bequeathed funds will be used to develop operations at the Ateneum, including enabling the introduction of a new experiential space for young children. The donor’s wish is that their name is not published. A permanent activity space for children under school age and their families will be opened at the Ateneum in 2028. Part of the bequeathed funds, as well as additional external funding to be collected, will be used to realise the space for children. September 15, 2023. Fernando Botero Angulo (19 April 1932 - 15 September 2023) was a Colombian painter and sculptor. His signature style, also known as "Boterismo", depicts people and figures in large, exaggerated volume, which can represent political criticism or humor, depending on the piece. He was considered the most recognized and quoted artist from Latin America in his lifetime, and his art can be found in highly visible places around the world, such as Park Avenue in New York City and the Champs-Élysées in Paris, at different times.
