The Whitney Museum presents major Roy Lichtenstein survey 'Like New'

Installation view of Roy Lichtenstein: Like New (Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, October 11, 2026–May 10, 2027).

NEW YORK, NY.- The Whitney Museum of American Art presents Roy Lichtenstein: Like New, opening October 11, 2026. This exhibition brings together over 130 works made from the early 1940s through the 1990s and offers a bold reconsideration of one of the defining artists of the Pop art movement and the twentieth century. Tracing Lichtenstein’s career-long investigation into duplication, perception, simulation, authorship, and image culture, Like New reveals an artist who understood that images are never fixed but instead continually copied, enlarged, circulated, and made new. Roy Lichtenstein changed the way we see images. Turning the visual language of mass-culture comics, advertising, consumer goods, and commercial printing into fine art, Lichtenstein produced works that looked cool, crisp, and machine-made but were meticulously handmade. Roy Lichtenstein: Like New looks beyond the artist’s iconic surfaces to trace how his early interest in perception and visual recognition shaped a career-l ... More

LENOX, MA.- Sohn Fine Art is presenting an exhibition featuring the photography of Anton Lyalin and Marco Ronconi, two artists whose evocative portraits offer intimate encounters with wild animals. Lyalin photographs across the expansive landscapes of Africa while Ronconi focuses on the northern hemisphere, with images on exhibit captured in the forests and mountains of Japan, creating a visual dialogue between distant ecosystems. Lyalin and Ronconi both seek out moments of quiet observation - a direct gaze, the turn of a head, the tension of a body at rest, or an animal briefly emerging from its surroundings. Their photographs demonstrate that the portrait tradition extends beyond the human figure. These are not simply photographs of wildlife in their environments but captures that encourage us to consider the individuality and presence of each being. Sohn Fine Art’s Director and Curator of the exhibition says, “Lyalin and Ronconi ... More

George Grosz, Eclipse of the Sun, 1926, oil on canvas. The Heckscher Museum of Art purchase.

HUNTINGTON, NY.- One hundred years after it was created, Eclipse of the Sun, the iconic 1926 painting by George Grosz, remains as politically and artistically powerful today as when Grosz painted it as a scathing critique of the Weimar Republic of Germany. Bristling with impactful symbolism and allegory, the masterpiece anchors a distinctive exhibition at The Heckscher Museum of Art where it stands as one of the most significant paintings in any public collection on Long Island. Eclipse of the Sun Now, September 26–May 9, 2027, explores consequential works of politically engaged art created over the last century. Selected from the collections of The Heckscher Museum and Art Bridges Foundation, the exhibition features more than 50 works by leading artists of our time, including Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Kerry James Marshall, Nam June Paik, Howardena Pindell, Cindy Sherman, Mickalene Thomas, and many more. "This exhibition marks the 100th year of our painting and celebrates the vital conversations it s ... More

PARIS.- Mennour is presenting Yinka Shonibare’s first solo exhibition in Paris entitled “The Wind, the Earth and the Fire” at 5 rue du Pont de Lodi. The show brings various ongoing bodies of work into dialogue, including new quilts, hand-painted bronze and textile sculptures, and positions the multidisciplinary artist as one of the leading voices to explore postcolonialism and hybridity in contemporary art. Born in London, raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Shonibare has always experienced the world by navigating, and somehow bridging, distinct cultures. Decolonial studies continue to show how defining a sense of identity and belonging is far more complex than solely relying on what can be found in a national archive. By tracing the history of Dutch wax textiles, Shonibare uncovers the deep layers of complexity embedded within them and conveys the impossibility of pinning down an artifact as authentic. Rooted in Indonesian textile traditions, the hand-crafted wax fabric was appropriated ... More

Marc Chagall, Portrait of Vava, 1953–56. Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard, 27 × 22 cm. Private Collection, Switzerland © Chagall®, by SIAE 2026

VERCELLI.- Lovers float through the sky, animals take on unexpected colors, and familiar villages appear suspended between reality and dreams. These are the images that have made Marc Chagall one of the most beloved artists of the twentieth century. Yet behind their apparent joy lies a story of displacement, loss, and an extraordinary determination to preserve the people and places that shaped his life. That more complicated side of Chagall is at the heart of "Chagall," a major exhibition at Spazio ARCA in Vercelli, Italy, running from October 13, 2026, through March 29, 2027. Bringing together 60 works spanning more than half a century, the exhibition explores how the artist transformed personal memories, historical upheaval, and enduring love into a visual language that remains remarkably relevant today. Born in 1887 in Vitebsk, now part of Belarus, Chagall grew up surrounded by the traditions and daily rhythms of a Jewish community that would remain central to his imagination. Although he left ... Institute for Art in Public Space Styria presents Milica Tomić: Aflenz Memorial   Gajah Gallery Manila presents BenCab's first sculptural survey   'Extraordinary' Bronze Age find in the Scottish Borders

Photo: Amel Bešlagic.

GRAZ.- How can we even recognize past violence for what it was if we remain at a distance from its present-day forms? Aflenz Memorial at the site of a former subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp near Leibnitz, Styria, has its starting point in the absence of visible traces of the camp and remembrance. After 1945, agricultural cultivation concealed the camp’s remains. Conceived as a walkable landscape, the memorial makes the camp’s dimensions tangible. Paths trace its former boundaries; the roll-call square and a prisoner barrack have been marked. The paths also recall guided tours organized by the municipality of Wagna, which kept the memory of the forgotten camp alive over many years. The Aflenz concentration camp was established in 1944. Its underground quarries were used to protect the armaments production from air raids. More than 900 men were subjected to forced labor under extreme conditions; at least 81 named prisoners died at the site. The project is grounded in Inve ... More

Benedicto ‘BenCab’ Cabrera, Walk By the Sea (2026), Bronze, 178 x 88 x 60cm.

MANILA.- Gajah Gallery Manila is presenting In Honor of Form, the first formal presentation of National Artist Benedicto ‘BenCab’ Cabrera’s sculptural practice. Centered on ten bronze sculptures realized in collaboration with Yogya Art Lab (YAL), the gallery’s foundry and production arm, the exhibition brings a new dimension to one of the Philippines’ most enduring artistic practices. A selection of works on loan from the BenCab Museum will also be on view, bringing into focus the subjects and forms that have sustained and evolved over the course of his practice. Developed over three years, from 2023 to 2026, the new bronze sculptures revisit some of BenCab’s most recognizable figures, giving these forms a renewed physical presence. The characteristic linearity of his paintings carries into the modeling of the figures, while the flowing drapery and rhythmic folds animate the sculptures with a sense of movement. In three dimensions, these figures unfold beyond the p ... More

EDINBURGH.- Two years after the announcement that the Peebles Hoard had been acquired for the nation, an extraordinary discovery made just 7 miles away by the same metal detectorist is shedding new light on the unique 3,000-year-old treasure. The Blyth Hoard, found in the Scottish Borders, contains remarkable Bronze Age finds, including clay moulds potentially used to manufacture some of the unique bronze fittings found in the Peebles Hoard. The hoard, which has been allocated to National Museums Scotland, also contains two bronze axe-heads and, intriguingly, a complete copper ingot, which is the first of its kind to be discovered in Scotland. Experts hope that analysis of the ingot might point towards the geographical source of the metals used in the making of the bronze objects in both hoards. The discovery was made in 2022 by metal detectorist Mariusz Stępień who first detected one of the axe-heads. Noticing that there were other bronze objects in the ground, Mariusz reported the find ... Exhibition view third floor Kunsthaus Bregenz, 2026. Photo: Markus Tretter © Torkwase Dyson, Kunsthaus Bregenz. Courtesy of the artist.

BREGENZ.- Torkwase Dyson transforms the ground floor of Kunsthaus Bregenz into the setting of a space-filling architectural sculptural intervention. Two enormous black, sail-shaped elements divide Peter Zumthor’s hall-like architecture. Made of black wood, the sculpture seems to soar upward as light as a feather and strikingly divides the ground floor, like a barrier. These forms, which Dyson calls “hypershapes,” are rooted in the theory of Black Compositional Thought. They are an expression of the self-determined emancipation of Black people from the geography of North America, shaped by slavery and extending into the present. The presence of the sculptures sharpens our sense of the position of our own body in space. Her reflections on Black geographies form the basis of her artistic practice. Rather than viewing geography as a neutral, physically given order, Dyson considers it an amalgamation of self-invention, social power relations, historical processes, and political decisio ... British Museum presents landmark survey of Korean art spanning over two millennia
LONDON.- A new exhibition at the British Museum explores over two millennia of Korean art and culture, offering a fresh perspective on the peninsula's rich creative history. Drawing on exceptional works from the collection of the late Samsung Chairman, Lee Kun-Hee, this is the first major exhibition on Korea's art and history at the British Museum in over 40 years. Spanning from 300 BC to the present day, Korea reveals how the country's artists and craftspeople have continually demonstrated creativity, resilience and superb technical skill, while absorbing outside influences to create a distinctive and enduring cultural identity. At a time when Korean culture has an unprecedented global presence, often described as the Korean Wave, or hallyu, this exhibition offers important context for understanding its deeper historical roots. Since the 1990s, the Korean Wave has driven the global popularity of South Korea's cultural economy, exporting music, film, television and wider pop culture worldwide. ... More

Kupferstichkabinett presents first major Flemish drawing exhibition in fifty years
BERLIN.- For the first time in fifty years, the Kupferstichkabinett is once again presenting an exhibition featuring more than 100 outstanding drawings by 28 Flemish artists from its collection. The drawings, which are often astonishingly painterly and powerful, were created between 1570 and 1650 and offer fascinating insights into the creative process, as they were rarely produced as an end in themselves but rather as preparatory works for a piece to be executed. The impressive range of subjects extends from Christian and allegorical scenes, through mythological and historical motifs, to genre scenes, portraits, still lives and landscapes. In the 15th and 16th century, one of Europe’s most important artistic centres emerged around the cities of Antwerp, Brussels, Mechelen, Bruges and Ghent. Brussels, the residence of the Spanish governors, was the focal point of political and religious power. With its harbour, Antwerp developed into Europe’s leading trading hub, handling grain, texti ... More

David Kennedy Cutler explores form, labor, and containment in exhibition at Derek Eller Gallery
NEW YORK, NY.- A continuation of my obsession with converting basic objects of life and labor into still lives that do not sit still, Vessels presents a semi-simple set of containers. From within vases, studio work clothing, and a shipping crate, an abundance of irrationally reaching flower arrangements spring forth. The handful of paintings and single sculpture that occupy Derek Eller Gallery’s intimate North Room are made using inkjet transfer and acrylic paint on canvas, which both conform to and defy their mediums’ trappings. Paintings become sculptures by revealing their innards and breaking their frames, and sculptures are elaborately constructed stretchers over which image-saturated canvas is stretched. The process-drenched works can be referred to as painting and sculpture, but are initiated by strategies derived from photography, printmaking, performance, surveillance and meta-fiction. The exhibition uses the broad definition of the vessel as a container to hold, to embody, to pres ... More

Flashback
On a day like today, Belgian painter Jacob Jordaens died
October 18, 1678. Jacques "Jacob" Jordaens (19 May 1593 - 18 October 1678) was a Flemish painter, draughtsman and a designer of tapestries and prints. He was a prolific artist who created biblical, mythological, and allegorical compositions, genre scenes, landscapes, illustrations of Flemish sayings and portraits. After the death of Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, he became the leading Flemish Baroque painter of his time. Unlike those illustrious contemporaries he never travelled abroad to study the Antique and Italian painting and, except for a few short trips to locations elsewhere in the Low Countries, he resided in Antwerp his entire life.
