NEW YORK, NY.- Alan Grinnell, author of Painting the Cosmos: Art and Iconography of the Ceramics of Ancient Panama, discusses what decades of looking at ancient Panamanian pottery have led him to see in an artistic tradition still unfamiliar to many specialists in pre-Columbian art. Drawing on more than 800 vessels, archaeological evidence, early Spanish accounts and his own background as a neuroscientist and biologist, Grinnell considers the possible meanings of hybrid animals, transformed shamans, hidden faces and recurring designs that persisted for centuries. PARIS.- One of the most important surviving visual records of Mexica migration has arrived in Paris, where the Boturini Codex is now on view at the museum of the Bibliothèque nationale de France through December 13, 2026. The display places the early 16th-century Indigenous manuscript in an unexpected architectural setting: the Galerie Mazarin, where figures from Greco-Roman mythology look down on images of Huitzilopochtli and the migration of the Mexica people. The encounter brings together two very different visual traditions while marking 200 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and France. The double-sided sheet contains working lyrics for “Idiot Wind” on one side and a nearly complete working draft of “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” on the reverse. Dylan wrote the latter under its working title, “You’re Gonna Make Me Miss You When You Go.” The manuscript includes revisions, discarded passages and an additional verse absent from the released recording.
