THE HAGUE.- A mysterious soldier who vanished from a painting by Pieter de Hooch centuries ago has returned to the scene following an extensive restoration at the Mauritshuis. The figure can now be seen once again in A Courtyard with a Smoking Man and a Drinking Woman, painted around 1658–60. The work shows a woman raising a glass to her lips as a man smokes nearby, with a child standing in a sunlit courtyard of the kind for which De Hooch became famous. For generations, the scene appeared to show an ordinary pause in daily life. But the abandoned objects on the table told a different story. A pipe and an open beer tankard seemed to belong to no one, while a cloak hung inexplicably over a nearby railing. Research revealed that the composition had originally included a third adult: a soldier dressed in armor and holding a large beer mug. V. and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, realised as part of the project series Kunsthalle unterwegs. Suitbertus Lake in Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth is normally not accessible to the public; it has been leased by the SAC Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth 1909 e. V. since 1970 and is used for fishing. As part of the exhibition Beneath the Surface, Beyond the Trees in the summer of 2026, the lake has been temporarily opened and used as a stage for artistic interventions. On view from November 13, 2026, through March 1, 2027, the exhibition is centered on Édouard Manet’s The Execution of Maximilian (c. 1867–68), one of the French artist’s most ambitious paintings, made all the more compelling by its now-fragmentary condition. WILMINGTON, DE.- Simeon Solomon: Queer and Jewish in Victorian London is the first comprehensive U.S. museum exhibition on the British artist Simeon Solomon (1840–1905), the only Jewish artist associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. Solomon used his art to explore his faith, as well as same-sex passion, receiving critical acclaim for his Judaic subjects and exhibiting at prestigious venues throughout England. Following arrests for homosexual crimes in 1873, Solomon was rejected by the art establishment. He lived precariously for his three remaining decades, yet his artistic output remained prolific. UTRECHT.- The Centraal Museum is presenting the first exhibition to examine the full breadth of Frans Franciscus’s career, bringing together more than 40 years of paintings and ceramics by one of the Netherlands’ most distinctive figurative artists. Titled Godenschemering – Frans Franciscus—or Twilight of the Gods—the exhibition ranges from works made during the artist’s early years at art school in Utrecht to recent large-scale compositions. A five-channel video installation displayed on horizontal monitors in freestanding black pedestals, Abbey Williams has reedited and “remixed” the work since its 2025 premiere in Basel for its American debut at CMCA—a recursive practice central to her process. Over the course of its nearly eight-minute run time, Fugue montages overhead shots of the artist flipping through oversized photobooks of classical architecture, her hands pawing at or caressing marble statues and columns as if they were living flesh. The work eventually pivots to images of the artist’s hands painting on the surface of monitors that she ultimately shatters with a hammer, creating illuminated fissures akin to lightning that she also dangerously caresses. New research reveals how ancient Maya households shaped the land for farming and rainwater control MERIDA.- Archaeologists studying ancient Maya settlements in the Yucatán Peninsula are finding new evidence that everyday households were carefully organized around the natural landscape, using slopes and low-lying areas to manage rainwater and support small-scale agriculture. The research, led by archaeologist Carlos Matos Llanes of Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History, or INAH, focuses on four sites excavated as part of the Maya Train Archaeological Salvage Project. The Avro is suspended above a Cierva C.30A Autogiro — a forerunner of the helicopter — and the Skycraft Scout Mark 1, an ultralight aircraft designed and made by Australian Ron Wheeler. Featured in the new museum’s largest exhibition space, Task Eternal will explore the intersection of design, innovation and technology and trace humanity’s quest to defy gravity, take flight and journey into the sky. On a day like today, Canadian painter Tom Thomson was born
August 05, 1877. Thomas John Thomson (August 5, 1877 - July 8, 1917) was a Canadian artist active in the early 20th century. During his short career, he produced roughly 400 oil sketches on small wood panels and approximately 50 larger works on canvas.[note 4] His works consist almost entirely of landscapes, depicting trees, skies, lakes, and rivers. He used broad brush strokes and a liberal application of paint to capture the beauty and colour of the Ontario landscape.
