HAMBURG.- THIS IS THE MODERN WORLD. Breakthroughs in Art, 1900–1960 takes a fresh look at the Hamburger Kunsthalle’s Modernism Collection, one of the premier collections of modern art in Germany with more than 3,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints and drawings. A selection of some 125 works – both well-known highlights and special new acquisitions – illustrate the profusion of new ideas and techniques that emerged as artists broke with tradition during six decades marked by extraordinary upheavals in culture and society. A great diversity of approaches becomes apparent within the various modernist trends. HOUSTON, TX.- In September the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents Going Underground: The Jewels of Bernhard Schobinger, tracing the radical career of Swiss avant-garde artist Bernhard Schobinger, who has created some of the most distinctive, influential and pathbreaking jewelry of the past five decades. NORFOLK, VA.- Between the 1930s and 1950s, hundreds of cultural luminaries from the early 20th century sat for portraits in a small studio in an apartment at 150 West 55th Street in Manhattan. In his apartment studio, American photographer Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) photographed some of the most influential artists, writers, musicians and cultural leaders of the time. More than 130 of those photographs are now part of the Chrysler Museum of Art’s collection. The transformative gift from the Philadelphia Museum of Art includes images of Walter P. Chrysler Jr., whose collection formed the foundation of the Museum. Before the gift, the Chrysler Museum only held one image by Van Vechten. September 03, 1864. Séraphine Louis, known as Séraphine de Senlis (Séraphine of Senlis; 3 September 1864 - 11 December 1942), was a French painter and artist. Self-taught, she was inspired by her religious faith and by stained-glass church windows and other religious art. Louis's works are predominantly rich fantasies of intensely repeated and embellished floral arrangements. She used colours and pigments that she made herself from unusual and exotic ingredients she never revealed that have stood the test of time for durable vividness.
